The Land v5.0.2 (theland502.zip, 204k) - This is the final version of The Land, made available by the author Mike Riley. It includes a detailed FAQ file about the game.
The Land is a traditional CRPG in CGA/text mode with lore based around the Stephen R. Donaldson's "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant" trilogy. I hadn't heard of it before playing this game. The game starts off without any introduction, after of course creating your character by choosing their name, stats, and a few other modifiers. You'll travel around with a very narrow field of view (our protagonist must be near-sighted) and talk with townsfolk who give you vague hints. While wandering outside, you'll be attacked by monsters. There is probably more to it than that, but that's as far as I got. See how far you can get! (Note that the default version here is 2.3 which is the most widely-played version, but the version shown in the video above is 5.0.2, which features VGA graphics and is available in the extra files section if you're looking for that version. You can also use the command line option /e in the 2.3 version for EGA graphics.)
Instructions:
Press ? in-game to get a list of the available key actions. After saving your game (press X in-game to save and quit) you can load it by adding the filename of your saved game when you run The Land, ex: "THELAND MYSAVE" at the DOS prompt. (Note that your save file will not be retained in the web version, to keep your saved games, download and run on your own machine.) You can also enable EGA mode in the 2.3 version by adding the command line option /e when you run the THELAND.COM file.

Play The Land in Browser
Game will not be saved after closing your browser. Download and install the game if you want to save.
CTRL-F12 attempts to speed up game, CTRL-F11 attempts to slow it down. See Instructions section above for help playing the game!
