Shadowcaster

Shadowcaster is a game with an interesting concept that was perhaps overshadowed by the title with the bigger name and similar specs, namely Ultima Underworld, also released by ORIGIN a year earlier. Like that game, Shadowcaster is a 3D first-person perspective RPG. It utilizes a 3D engine created by John Carmack in between the Wolfenstein 3D engine and the DOOM engine. Carmack commented that it "almost had a crazy voxel character rendering system, but it wound up with conventional scaled sprites." (Source) Anyways, as to the actual game ... unlike many games of this type, you do not have a party of characters. Rather the game's protagonist, Kirt, has shapeshifting abilities and can transform into several other forms, each with their own unique powers. It's definitely an interesting concept and worth checking out if you enjoyed Ultima Underworld.
