+ XP and dos
I have xp as most of you know
and those users wit XP should realize that there isn'ta "shut down in MS dos mode" command in shut down. How can they do that its not fair! anyway,
i was wondering if it IS somehow possible to actually shut down in dos mode on XP.

It all depends...
It all depends.
If, as is usual, your Windows XP install is (quite rightly since it's more stable and secure) on an NTFS formatted hard disk then no. Unless you're prepared to use Partition Magic or similar to create a FAT partition for the DOS games you want to run.
If however your Windows XP install is on a FAT32 partition then I'd use a boot disk. A great one for gaming is Gameday. Download Gameday.zip from here-
http://jason-n3xt.org/dos/cgi-bin/ikonboard/files.cgi
Put a floppy disk in your drive and extract and run the program. Then, when you want to run a DOS game that you have installed to hard disk, then boot up using the Gameday disk. Switch to your C: drive and then the game's directory and run the game.
Note that you will probably have to set up your sound card's DOS drivers on the gameday disk first.
There are many ways to run recalcitrant DOS games on an XP system. If they won't work in any of the compatibility modes that XP provides then you could even create a seperate partition and install DOS 6.22 or Windows 98 (real name DOS 7.10 ).
Boot disks are good though. It may take a bit of work and hit-and-miss attempts to get it right. But it's the best way to learn, eh?
(Note that, if you try Gameday and it can't see your hard disk, then you have the NTFS file system. It's a good file system. But it's not much use for DOS gaming. Consider using a utility to create a small FAT32 partition to use for DOS gaming. Note that this may change your drive letters - particularly the CD-ROM/DVD drive!)

EMS and DOS disk size and file system type
To create EMS you need a boot disk that loads EMM386.EXE with the RAM switch (as opposed to the NOEMS switch). Any good DOS games boot disk will do this for you.
Regarding disk size- MS-DOS 3 only recognised hard disks up to 32MB in size. MS-DOS 4 upped this to 2GB.
FAT16 is necessary for all DOS versions up to 7.1 (even 7.0, the version that Windows 95 and 95a ran on used FAT16). With the advent of Windows 95 OSR2 and of course Windows 98 came support for FAT32 and disk sizes up to 2 Terabytes!
I've just used a boot manager to set up DOS 6.22 on this machine too. I hope that'll make 486player happy anyway!

EMS under Windows ME
EMS is an old fashioned memory type. To get your game to run you can either-
1/ Use a boot disk like the one I mention in my first post in this thread. Boot with the boot disk and then navigate to where the game is and run it. By "navigate" I mean use simple DOS commands like typing "C:" to log onto your C: drive and "CD ***" where *** is whatever the game's folder is and so on.
2/ Download and install the DOS mode fix for Windows ME so that you can access full DOS mode properly from the OS. You would need to create a suitable autoexec.bat and config.sys file for running the game with sound.
3/ Right-click the config.sys file that's in the root of your C: drive and select "Open with". Make sure that the "Always open" box is unchecked. Choose Notepad from the menu. Add the following lines to the beginning of the file-
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE RAM AUTO
Save the file and reboot. The game should now run.
Good luck.

DSA
Having looked on Google it appears to be an RPG of fairly recent vintage. However it appears the game and its followers are all German and I don't read German (and I'm not too good with Babelfish translations either - now there's a language!).
I suggest killerfred goes to one of the forums associated with the DSA fan sites and posts. Post in English if that's your language and I expect someone will be along to help you in time.
