Sounds identical to Desert Strike by Electronic Arts, the sequel was Jungle Strike. It's a really good game, I played it for hours when it first came out...

I have (and still have) this superb game on my Amiga 500... but was it ever released on any other platforms? Especially for the PC, I seem to remember there where some pretty similar clones all taken from Defender on the Atari! Would be nice to play it again on my 486 DOS gaming computer, of even IB...
