If the game tracks the number of saves used in each save file, start a new game. Save once, then use a hex editor to search the save file for any entries of 1 (or '01' or whatever it is in hex). If there aren't many versions of 1, just note where they all are.

Go back to the game, change nothing, but save again. Now go back to the save file and find where there are any 2s. If any overlap, that's the number you need to change on your important file (but back it up first).

However, things might not be that simple (it might not count the number of saves in the file, it might not start at '1' etc.)
