Otherland is a good series as well.

Try out the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan

It's a very good series if you like the Fantasy thing, has some feel to the Tolkein stuff as well so it seems to appeal to a wider audience.

Pretty good serie the sword of truth.
Maybe a bit too Dungeons&Dragons style for me , but my daughter loves his books.
