Death Rally

Post by 486 player »

DEVELOPER: Remedy Entertainment
PUBLISHER: Apogee
DEVELOPED IN: 1996
REQUIREMENTS: 486 DX2 66, 8 MB RAM, VLB video card
SOUND: Sound Blaster(Pro, PAS, AWE 32), GUS
CONTROLS: Joy, kb
SPACE: 7 MB
MULTIPLAY: IPX, serial cable (4 players), modem (2)
PRICE: $10
TESTED IN: 486 DX 50 8/16 MB+1 MB SMARTdrv, Cirrus Logic 1 MB, key board, Sound Blaster compatible, MS-DOS 6.22
NOTE: Doesn't start 51st time or later.

I, who hates car games as former drunk booze, should get excited when I can shoot in it. Yeah, right.

Shareware version has 6 tracks, whese are (I know that it's written 100s o' times before, but its' true!) mirror images of each other just with new graphics. Only 2 can be driven if thou've a slow car, 2 when she's tuned up enough and last only if thou know when brake's used and dost it (unlike they who only a li'll loosens gas even if curve's 160 degreed (like me :D)). In Easy race, only 4 o' 'em are available. The player must choice the right tracks to rise up ranking list from bottom. Others are too hard even 'Speed makes me dizzy'. Restartin' more than once is more than usual if thou don't want to stay under rank 17.

Because there ain't no mercy, and damage's gettin' a lot certainly, there must must be a way to fix'n'tune car. There is. Being in 1st 3, points and cash are earned. But why to play fair when there are weapons *grin*. In black market thou can by mines, spike, super fuel (bye bye armor..)
or damage opponents car. Rate changes from low to almost half, so it isn't good allways. If thou'rt poor, shark gives some, but takes it back. All stuff ain't available in every rage to makin' thee to register game. Other drivers does buy 'em but not new cars.

The argument that game requires a fast graphic card is more rubbish than in Quake. The slowest car feels like slow (as it should) and full tuned Sentinel IS fast! It doesn't affect anythin' to experience; thou don't see it 'cause thou'rt centered in drive. Even doubling memory didn't add any concrete to it. Smart Drive shortens loadin' times to medium but they aren't painfull without it either. 86

Graphics are very dark. In Rock Mountain thou can't see lines o' track and WILL lose. It's not funny to re-set lightness afterwards. 60

There just few songs. Fortainetly 1 o' 'em's good. Effects without annoin' commentator (or whatever he is) are fine, but dunno are motor sounds very real (8 bit card th' know). 75

Save & load style gives money rapidly and faster babies are got soon. Too soon: In couble o' days (less than 1 if thou'rt a lucky and active player) thou'rt in rank 8, so game offers too much for shareware. In sw it'll do, but if they meaned to make a shooter rally, more stuff should be sold under the counter. Like missiles, laser, and so on. If non-violentic mode's selected, spectators should be safe, but they aren't. Computer players empties their clips in the beginnig so then there's only drivin' and it feels too much like regular driving game.

Rally doesn't statisfy either action or car players but in between comments are allmost only positive (if lenght not counted). Tryin' costs nothing, but tenner can be invested more sensibly.
