Don't put a message board there until you get at least 100 hits a day, otherwise the odds are nobody will join.

Make a site first and be sure you have enough on it to seperate it from other sites.

First off, don't start a message board and expect to get 1,000+ members in a month or two, that doesn't work out very often.

Instead, make your own website. Once you get it going pretty good and have a few resident groupies (encourage fan mail, guest books, aim, whatever. Try and keep in contact with your "fans") set up a simple but good quality Usenet style discussion boards and get some conversations going. Once you have 10 or 15 permanent members and get around 75 posts a week, you'll want to upgrade to a message board similar to this one.

Keep in mind, though, that dosgames.com was in existence 3 years before this forum was created, so it might be a long wait.

Another thing to keep in mind when you do make a forum similar to this is not to make any more forums then necessary... I've made that mistake here before, and it generally just causes more chaos then its worth.

Don't be afraid to advertise your site. While you probably don't want to spam up other message board about it, join a good deal of communities with high readership levels and, when the topic comes up, make sure you get a link to your site in... With a very polite and informative post, of course. ;) Tell friends in real life, get brownie points with the admins of more popular websites (*cough*) so they'll link to you, hold contests, and update your boards and site constantly. Get involved with whatever community comes out of it.

And finally, while you don't want disordered forums, don't make your forums so serious and businesslike that people can't have fun or goof off when need be.

Good luck with your message board! :)

badboy, Just a word of caution: make me, or one of the mods here, the administrator if anyone asks... kittie is not a reliable admin, and doesn't offer security of his site... and he's just 15, and an admin of his site. I am graduated (College as a Networker), and willing to do an administrator position on your site...

Just whatever you do, DON'T put kittie as admin... not even mod.... leave him as member in case he needs banned. This is just a safety measure (talk to the mod or admin here to find out... I'm not going to say what he - or the persons in charge of his site - did... *just bending the rules* *cough* *that's all*)

You know what is

really annoying?

When people write like this

instead of making proper paragraphs.

Anyhow, this thread is NOT for flaming other members. (And I mean both of you, but at least radray11 made a valid point about being careful who you give power) Anyone who follows suit will <html><strike>be raped in the ass</strike></html> banned. I think I've given enough warnings already for you guys to know this kind of behavior isn't tolerated.

If your bad at web design, just buy a book on it or something.
I don't think there are any websites in existance that use C++ to make pages. You really only need HTML and maybe some Javascript to spruce things up.

Just decide on what you want your website to be about. You can't just make some cheap Tripod page called "My w3b51t3!!!1" with no original content and expect to attract people to a message board.

All you really need to make a website is notepad and a good host, really. PHP, Java, mySQL, and other utilities you *will* need ocassionally, and are all very important as far as giving the page style/making it easier to navigate, but not really necessary if you don't want to use them, or are just going for a more simple website.

(Speaking of which, I really do need to do some work on creating my own... I've been planning to do so since winter, but I've either been too busy, too lazy, or a combination of the two  )
