With Iraq, I share
Dennis Kucinich's idea.
The United States must ask the United Nations to manage the oil assets of Iraq until the Iraqi people are self-governing.
The United Nations must handle all the contracts: No more Halliburton sweetheart deals, No contracts to Bush Administration insiders, No contracts to campaign contributors. All contracts must be awarded under transparent conditions.
The United States must renounce any plans to privatize Iraq. It is illegal under both the Geneva and the Hague Conventions for any nation to invade another nation, seize its assets, and sell those assets. The Iraqi people, and the Iraqi people alone must have the right to determine the future of their country's resources.
The United States must ask the United Nations to handle the transition to Iraqi self-governance. The U.N. must be asked to help the Iraqi people develop a Constitution. The U.N. must assist in developing free and fair elections.
The United States must agree to pay for what we blew up.
The United States must pay reparations to the families of innocent Iraqi civilian noncombatants killed and injured in the conflict.
The United States must contribute financially to the U.N. peacekeeping mission.
The United Nations, through its member nations, will commit 130,000 peacekeepers to Iraq on a temporary basis until the Iraqi people can maintain their own security.
U.N. troops will rotate into Iraq, and all U.S. troops will come home.
The United States will abandon policies of "preemption" and unilateralism and commit to strengthening the U.N.
I think we should just leave Afghanistan alone. Why even ask that question? The US really isn't doing anything there, nor do they have a reason to.

For Afghanistan: Invest in education and infrastructure and then leave the country leaving maybe 1,000 peacekeepers behind. Afghanistan is still a 3rd world country and there's not much the U.S. can do for good or bad there save wasting money. It's (somewhat) stable government can do the rest.
Iraq: Invest and train heavily in Iraqi police forces/fire departments/hospitals etc. A strong domestic police department would be hated less and work a lot more efficiently. Plus it would allow us to send home the ~!00,000 U.S. troops serving as makeshift police officers and concentrate remaining troops on taking out resistance fighters. In the long run-once Iraq is self governing come this July, costs for the police forces could be transferred to the Iraqi government and spread out city by city so Iraqi taxpayers could deal with it locally rather than taking a huge hit on the national U.S. budget. I would assume that once democracy takes effect, the issues of commerce and economy will be settled by local entrepreneurs. All contracting should be done locally though to keep money from being siphoned out of Iraq and into the pockets of wealthy businessmen.

Let them all rot. If the people like being ruled by dictators let them, its not our call. If they want to have 100+ offenses that result in the death penalty who are we to judge them?
The US and UN should intervene when one country tries to take over another country, internal matters should be settled by the citizens of that country. If you have a madman in power in a country then just isolate that country but not trading with them until the government falls apart.
Iraq and Afghanistan should be left to their own devices. As vietnam has shown if the people realy believe in something they can overcome any force with blood, if they dont want to fight and die for their cause why the hell should we. The US faught 2 bloody wars , one for independence, and one for keeping the union together. The freedoms we enjoy today come from those 2 major wars and the spilling of alot of blood and much destruction. You have to burn a few trees to keep the forest healthy.
There are too many needy people in the US to be spending billions on some ungrateful arabs. Since we already made a mess of things all we can realy do now is let both countries hold their elections and then get the hell out completely. There are enough guns in both countries to defend any government that they elect if they chose to.
