space shooter game.[Another World]

trying to find a game i was playing as i child. can remember that it started out hanging in a cage above a pit in a space prison. the way to escape was to move from side to side to make the cage move until it fell down.

I don't think it started out there, but I believe you're talking about Out Of The World, also known as Another World in other territories. An early level starts with you in a cage, but it's not the first one.
