Looong Search for VGA Spaceship Shooter

I've been looking for this for a long time. I've waded through a LOT of lists..

IMPORTANT: The title theme is "Night On Bald Mountain"! That's the strongest and only dependably clear memory. It was in MIDI.

( Imagine this piece in midi: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCEDfZgDPS8 )

Apart from that, it's a fast-paced 3D ship-to-ship combat shooter, probably sprite-based like Wing Commander, as opposed to 3D models. I don't think there were any cutscenes or voices whatsoever and it was very light-weight despite it's good production quality. I'm pretty sure the UI's colour scheme was in the red-orange-brown-yellow range, it wasn't too easy, and I seem to remember some kind of evil alien face image at some point. If that's helpful...

I remember it being all action, no story-telling. No characters, just you and baddies. It was straight-to-action levels and probably even had a high score table.

We're talking mid-nineties - 320x200x256 VGA and Soundblaster. I can't remember having this with a box or anything and I didn't get pirated stuff, so I think it was probably unbloated enough to fit on a demo disk.

Titles that that several people have kindly but wrongly suggested:

Descent
Swiv 3D
Terminal Velocity
Frontier II
Darker
Anything Star Wars-ish, or Star Trek-ish

It's been a long search. PLEASE, someone tell me that's familiar because I'm grasping for leads. ;/ Cheers.

Hi, welcome to the forum! I took a look around Mobygames, and here are some possibilities, tho I don't think any of them match your description exactly ... I don't personally recall which game used the Night on Bald Mountain music ...

Starglider 2

Linewars

I dunno if either of those are even close. Hopefully other ppl will have more suggestions ... if it was a mostly unknown shareware game (especially if it was only released locally in the UK) it may be tough to track it down. :(

Star Crusader had a real wing-commander-ish story, but the training simulator played played that way with level after level of bad guys.

I'm starting to wonder if the game had terrain now. Maybe even a pre-fog-technology horizon. Maybe even baddies on the ground. I've come accross several games in my search like that but not the one I'm after.

I'm reluctant to say this incase I'm wrong and it creates a false lead, but I have a strong suspicion that the title is very arbitarary and vague, and not-at-all Star-Trekky/Star-Warsy. I've been looking for games with names liek "The Fury", "Havoc", "Mayhem", "Tornado", "Chaos"... It's just a gut feeling, but the game REALLY doesn't seem made by Star Trek fans at all, if that makes any sense. It seems to be fulfilling a desire for fast-paced action, not a desire for being in some futuristic society. The enemy might be some named alien race, but that's probably not a big part of it if so.

Can't believe there isn't loads of people jumping on this with the right answer, saying "I loved that game! It's popular!" It was a great production. ;/ Should have been huge!

More long shots, but Freespace & Freespace 2, and Eschalon

Yeh, its older than those, and less missiony. Thanks anyway.

I'm just hoping the theme music will trigger a memory in someone.

Just a little thought, could the game you're looking for actually be a modification of the aforementioned Elite II? Or could there be any other reason for it to have the same title music?

It had a veeery different feel. :/ The Night on Bald Mountain tune was the intro/title music too. It's not unlikely that two seperate games would use it, because it's a good powerful, well-known classical piece. (I feel pretentious calling classical music "pieces" and "movements" :P )

Oops, don't know why I wasn't logged in then. Can't edit that post to add this:

The title music of Elite II isn't Night on Bald Mountain. I'm told them music is in the game, but I've seen the title screen when I youtubed it to check it. That game looks very Star Trekky. Cheers though.

Just a guest so the link on the mobygames website can be found via keyword search thunderstrike.

Took me all last night to remember this, was wondering if this is the same game you couldn't remember.

Fun game!

Also, in the beginning there is a classical music score that is played, however it isn't the same song as you linked. It's this one.

Link on youtube is titled "Phantom of the Floppera"
(happens to be played via the disk drives themselves, but this is the same music)

Thanks.
