Weird, ancient platformer?

All right! I'm looking for a very old game for MS-DOS. It was a platformer, or at least side-view.
It was very low-res, possibly to the point where they were more Commodore 64 than DOS, but I know it definitely wasn't any non-Microsoft computer. I don't think it had any music or sound (if it did, it was just computer speaker beeps).
I can recall a little about the plot - I believe it might have been about aliens invading Earth; you played as a teenager or young boy fighting against them. (I want to say he was nerdy and had red hair, but that might just be Another World memories
) I am almost certain the game had a level editor (although I could never figure it out...). The only part I remember is an underground cave area, with very fiddly and detailed geometry. I think the game had collectables that were either soda cans or pieces of gold. My only other memory is that the screen seemed pretty thin; it's possible that there was a large HUD on either side of the screen taking up space.
This was in a period where I was downloading everything from sites like DOSgames, so it was probably either a game that was available in demo forms or abandonware. Thanks in advance!
