Dosgames.com's free e-mail service has been discontinued as explained by the webmaster in an e-mail sent to your address two months ago. (Though I am surprised as well... I wasn't expecting it 'til the beginning of March)

Hey all ... apparently BigMailBox decided to cancel their free service without telling me. They want me to pay $40 per month to continue the "free" email service. I do plan to reopen it for awhile, however I need to get this form faxed in, then they have to charge my CC, and that probably won't happen until tomorrow, and then they still need to reopen the account ... so ... hold tight ... it'll most likely reopen by the end of the week. It was originally going to close down by March 1 but I guess I'll have to leave it open a bit longer now.

No, I have been assured that all user data is intact.

I am not interested in another free service; the DOS Games email service will be cancelled ... well, I dunno when exactly. At first it was going to be March 11, then I moved it up to March 1 ... now I'll probably make it March 14 or something, it depends on how fast I get get the account setup again.

Question: Now that you have your own server, couldn’t you host your own SMTP/POP3/other email protocol server? Or would that be too expensive bandwidth wise? For a safety precaution, you could limit users to, say, 1 MB of email storage per account and make sure that everyone who signs up for it has something to do with Dosgames.com and isn’t just some freeloader who just wants another server for spamming purposes.

Email is now working again. Stupid BMB needed me to fax in the form. (I thought this was supposed to be an internet company, why do they need me to FAX a form? Who still uses fax machines?!) And apparently the first time I faxed it, they only received the cover sheet not the form itself. So that was why it was held up so long. There still seem to be ads all over it, but hopefully I'll figure out why that's the case later today.

There is no "join" or "sign up" link because the service is still being closed, probably around April 7. (ie one month from today)

As per DB's suggestion, I'd rather not deal with the hassle of manually giving out POP email accounts ... all it would take to get my account suspended permantly would be for one person to send out SPAM. Not saying that anyone here would, it is just too much of a risk to take unfortunately.

You mean they (who are "they" anyway?) suspend your account if someone using it spams? Wouldn't they just rather send you an E-mail telling you to delete that users account instead? (Much like the IDSA sends e-mails to Warez sites hosts ordering them to delete the website)

"they" = my host ;) I think most hosts are very strict about spam ... how do they (my host) know who's using the email account? I'm supposed to be in charge of the server, so I have to take responsibility for the users. *shrugs*

Heh. For some reason I was under the impression that you owned your own host. (A misconception derived from the RAQ4 server update post most likely)

In any case, if your host would shut you down simply because one of your members sent a spam, then for no reason feel any pressure to add it. I suggested it for what I thought to be an easy to add convenience feature (which it is most likely not, now that I see the full ramifications of adding it), not a necessity.
