GAMER's questions about everything that crosses her mind ...
So, i've been using AVG Free anti-virus...
It's all "myeh myeh myeh, upgrade me".
I was wondering what everyone else uses and whether there is anything for free that is worth using or whether i should fork out money for protection?
I'm a noob, so bear that in mind when responding.
I like download links, instructions and long walks on the beach.
Kthx.

Re: Anti-virus software...
AVG is pretty good, simply set the updates auto.GAMER wrote: I was wondering what everyone else uses and whether there is anything for free that is worth using or whether i should fork out money for protection?
And update it manually if needed to the latest version, thought it's 8.x nowadays.
Norton is complete SHIT for home users, it's excellent for workspaces and so, but not for home users, as all paying suites.

There was a post about this on Lifehacker recently, they list the user-voted top 5 ... although AVG is on the list a lot of users complain about v8 in the comments:
http://lifehacker.com/395046/five-best- ... plications
I used to run AVG, then I used Avast and now have paid for NOD32. Whenever I used AVG/Avast I would eventually turn off the active scanning component because it would slow things down too much ... I like NOD32 because it doesn't usually cause any slowdown at all as it scans ... tho the main drawback is that it's not free.

Hmm. Okay...
I'll update to v8 and see how it goes.
I don't really have an issue with the scans slowing everything down...
It doesn't worry me.
Thanks for the responses.

The constant nagging for updating ya AVG was probably because the older 7.x versions will be discontinued, and thus leaving you with lesser protection.
One drawback: doesn't work on W98 anymore.
Shame, my mom's still on W98SE.
But on the other hand, contrary to Abyss she's not visiting pron sites.

I use Avast Home. I used the erm, paid, version of NOD32 some while ago, but it failed at blocking crap coming from the friendly members of my former network.
Never looked much into AVG, but then again I brows the Internetz and install software under a mild paranoid regime. So yea, I'm clean for almost a whole year now.

That's almost exactly what I was going to say... I never looked into AVG because so many people have complained about itLarry Laffer wrote:I use Avast Home. I used the erm, paid, version of NOD32 some while ago, but it failed at blocking crap coming from the friendly members of my former network.

Yeah, also lots of peeps complain about dosbox, it's really hard to get that crap thing working, so you better avoid it.wardrich wrote:... I never looked into AVG because so many people have complained about it

Most complaints I've heard about were crashes... but that was a while back, so it's probably gotten betterdosraider wrote:Yeah, also lots of peeps complain about dosbox, it's really hard to get that crap thing working, so you better avoid it.wardrich wrote:... Same about dosbox .....wardrich wrote:Most complaints I've heard about were crashes... but that was a while back, so it's probably gotten better
Honnestly, when you see how the n00bs install lighthearted all kind of totally stupid crap on their PCs it's a miracle that the PCs even want to boot.

Let's hope no noobs read this. They'd be able to actually kick the computer whilst wearing boots.
Which would be VERY VERY BAD!
If they don't get pics

Hmm.
I have another query.
Didn't think i needed to make a new thread though...
Is there a way to catalogue the names of files you have?
For example...
I have no desire to back up ALL of my music collection.
I have the most important stuff already on an external device...
But i would be upset if i lost everything without having a list of what i had, incase i forgot some of it...
Yes.
So, i was wondering if there was a way to record the names of files...perhaps all in one small file?
(And obviously i am lazy and i don't want to go through and write everything down...so yes.)
Thanks.

Open a command window ( you know that black looking doslike thing)
Go to the drive you desire
cd to the folder you desire
input
dir >dir.txt
dir /w >dir.txt
dir /w/s >dir.txt
w for width
s for subfolders included
makes a dir txt file of the folder/drive saved in the folder/drive you're in
dir >x:\folder\dir.txt
same but makes a dir txt file in x:\folder\ of your choice
And there exist TONS of freeware proggys who do that in windows if you want ...
as are:
http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/system/fwdiskcat.html
[Edit]
BTW, you best always add that /w thingy in the dir comm line or you get a lot of garbage ....
And as you're a woman: dir.txt can be dir1.txt, dir2.txt, music.txt, ......whatever_that_makes_sense_to_you.txt .....
