Yea, DOOM scared the crap out of me a couple times when I first played it. More of a monster popping up when you don't expect it kinda scare ... whereas a game like Silent Hill as Gamer_V mentioned was more of a suspenseful thing.

I agree, DOOM frightened me a little at times. I haven't played Silent Hill, but I'll try to check it out. I don't really have any other frightening games of my own, but they seem to appeal to me.

Playing Quake, when you first get to the fallen castle, or whatever it's called, and go down the stairs into the standing water, walk a ways, and then suddenly the undead minions start standing up out of it and clawing at you. That's always held a special place in my heart.

Well, for its time... Alone In The Dark 1 scared the CRAP out of me... but then, I was like 12 or so when I played it.

Last game to actually give me spooks was the Fatal Frame series for the Dreamcast/PS2.

Oh yea! In the original Unreal (not Tournament) there was a part where you're going down a dead-end hallway and suddenly a gate shuts behind you. Then the lights start shutting off, starting with the ones farthest away down the hallway and slowly getting closer, click, click click ... then you hear the monster's growls and you have to fight/run in almost total darkness.

Ah, I recall buying Unreal, then having to upgrade to 64megs of RAM and buy an add-on 3d accelerator video card (Canopus Pure3D if I remember correctly) in order to play it properly :D

If you want to play a frightening game try The Suffering 2.
It is the most frightening game I ever played.
Almost all the game you play in darkness. You have a flashlight but the battery hold only 30 seconds or less. And the monsters come when the battery is down :o

The first time I played Alien Vs Predator 2 was pretty freaky. In all fairness it probably wasn’t a good idea to play a game were aliens and monsters sneak up on you in a game environment that’s very poorly lit and all metal so you can hear their claws scratching along in distant hallways at about... 2 in the morning. :P

I would have said that, but I was too afraid to play it... and the title says "...played by you".

But, seriously, probably System Shock 2. I never finished it just because of that.

Yeah, if you're looking for a truely disturbing game enviroment, System Shock 2 will do it to ya... wandering through flickering passageways, hearing the whispers of the "many" surrounding you, seeing holographic images of the recently dead walk around, scream franctically, and then die gruesomely at random points, listening to the breathing of a many-infested zombie sneaking up behind you... aaaaahhhhhhh, what a great game. Can really mess with your brain if you play it for more than an hour straight, or after 10 PM, though. Not for the mentally unstable.

Some horror games merely try to scare you... System Shock 2 tries to destroy your mind.

Yeah, scary! But I never understood why only the marine scenario tried to be scary!

There's nothing as frightening as death scenes in Sierra's adventure games... :cuccoan:
