FWIW, you can upload your own avatars to the server now. I have no idea why I had to telnet to the machine to change the permissions on the phpbb folders but ... anyways. It works now, at least for me. Of course, if you already have your avatar hosted elsewhere, there's really no need to copy it to the server.
