Time is an invention by man, to organize our thoughts. We can't travel back through, and we can't quicken the experience either.

But what about the internal clock mechanism thingy? I mean, when you're happy time seems to "fly by" and when something really bad or tragic happens it seems to slow down.

And no it's not because of drugs :P

And actually what if we can travel trough time just like Einstein presumed? I mean what's with the dimensions contact it involved?

We can perceive time differently. Our brains long to hold onto the happy times and rush through the sad times, but our emotions get in the way and make the opposite occur.
Our internal clocks are just like our internal tape measures. I can tell you how long a foot it by looking at it, just because I have the reference in my head. Since we've been working on clock time, we can have an idea of how much time has elapsed.

i found last night that thi explaination proves that travelling backwrds through tme will destroy humanity

if you travel back in time and change anything then return to the present, you will be living in the future of the changed object\event and therefore would not have gone back in time to change it from happening if the idead hadnt come to change the outcome of the event or object. this makes an endless loop if you go back to the future you youll be in the changed future making the idea for changing the event or objet never exsisting rojecting you back the the orginal present where you get an idea to change an object or event.
so now you and time are in an endless loop
One time I had a Jack and coke and it had a lime in it, And I saw that the lime was floating. That's good news man. Next time I'm on a boat and it capsizes, I'll reach for a lime... I'll be water skiing without a life preserver and people'll say 'What the hell?' and I'll pull out a lime...and a lemon too. I'm saved by the buoyancy of citrus.

Of course!

And do not forget what may happen in case you meet yourself whilst traveling back or forth in time :shifty:

Some time travel questions that come to mind ...

If someone travel back in time to before they were born, and kills their mother ... would they
1) Instantly disappear because they can no longer exist (they couldn't be born if their mother dies before they were born)?
2) Not disappear, because if they didn't exist they couldn't have killed their mother?
3) Only disappear when they travel forward to their own time (ie their "starting point" before they went back)?
4) Still exist, but in a totally different body/mind/personality since they were born from different parents?
IMHO it seems like it'd be 1 or 2, but really this'd be a paradox of time travel ...

If I go back in time and change something, does that result in changes made to our current timeline, or the creation of a second timeline? (ie, a new fork in the road, so to speak)

If time travel is possible, wouldn't people from the future already have come back to their past (our present), so wouldn't we know about it by now?

How about this ... if someone travels back in time and changed the past, would there be any way for us to know that the past had been changed? (Off the top of my head I'd say no but then I haven't really thought about it much.)

Um yea just some stuff I thought about as I read this :P I started to read Hawking's Brief History of Time awhile back but got bored and didn't finish it. The chapter on time travel in William Lane Craig's book was good, I'll have to reread it over the xmas break, it probably answers some of these qns :) Although I think that he concludes that time travel is not possible unless you subscribe to a non-linear concept of time (which, in practice, no one does).

Simple explanation to Time Travel? Watch "Back to the Future" parts 1,2, and 3 :P

But seriously though, I think it will always be impossible to travel BACK in time (as it is a unidirectional vector quantity that travels in a single streamline that can never be reversed) but there maaaay be a way to skip time or go to the future by biologically ageing slower than anyone else if our body can survive light speed according to Albert Einstein's theory.

I saw this experiment on the Discovery Channel where the time for people travelling on a Jet plane seemed to go some split seconds slower than the ones on ground.

So I guess going to the future might be a bigger possiblity than going to the past but hey who knows there could be loop holes to an alternate universe somewhere. :shifty:

As for the killing your mother in the past thing (ahem... really wish you could've thought of a nicer example)... well I think even if we COULD travel back in time we'd be like um... invisable to everyone else in the past and we couldn't touch or even do anything to change but just watch things as they take place. Surely God set up a FEW restrictions round there B)

Btw I recommend Carl Sagan's "COSMOS" It explains literally everything about Space and Time and it never gets boring! The pictures are nice too!!

Here's a good question... someone theorysed that the same matter can't be in the same place at the same time... So... say(presuming you could travel back) you find your younger ego... what would happen if you touched it?

And speaking of Einstein's theory.... there was a thing involving worm holes, they are supposed to be ways of traveling faster within space(perhaps you heard of the 2 dots on a paper example... In case you didn't ... take a piece of paper and draw two dots far away from each other. Now tell me what would be the shortest way from dot A to dot B??? A straight line you'd say. Well it's not... Take the paper, fold it and you'll see that the distance from dot A to dot B reduces dramatically[it's still a distance if you're thinking in cosmic distances]. It's believed it's the same with worm holes)

And to carry on... What if Worm Holes would not just transport to another space? What if they would transport to another time and space???

larry you have watched event horizon haventyou

but the way i see it is that if something has changed in the past that asnt before we would never know as in out current time it wouldve already happened and be in the past before we were born so we would see a difference not as a difference

True, I think that the only one that would know that the timeline has been changed would be the one that actually changed it.

And... I might have seen it... I watch plenty of Science thingys shows. ;)

I don't believe going back will happen but going forward a possibility, one day we could be bionically frozen, I'm not sure if this true but they are currently working with a species of frog which can bionically freeze itself during snowy winter periods and revive itself during the spring, it's got something to do with it's cells, that allow it to freeze and revive, over a period of 3 months.

I also believe that one day in the near future they will find a cure for the disease Cancer and it they will call it "Capricorn". I have my hunchs that will have something to do with a toxic or acidic tropical aquatic animal or island plant, that when combined with an chemical from another non toxic or acidic tropical aquatic animal or island plant the cells of cancer eliminate rapidly. However, also with my hunch, something else will pop up afterwards and more research will go into it.

Well of course we need cryogenisation. Let's consider space flying. Despite the fact that I believe we will manage to build ships that would pass warp 1, bionically freeze will occur a long time before that. So let's say the will send man to er...(for example, Pluto) we'd have to travel 4.28 billion km (or 2.66 billion miles ) And you can imagine how long will that take(of course if we'd travel at warp 1 it'd take only 5.3 h). So we'd need bionically freezing in order not to age more than eh.. needed.

Sorry for the double post but this just hit me:
What if there really were more universes(ad in not a universe but a multiverse) and each had a time of it's own? say there were the possibility of traveling between these "parallel dimensions", we could go both forward and backward in time(and we would no longer worry about altering "our" timeline)

Time travel definition[what I think]: you can go forward or go backward or staying at the same time .

Now,I know some facts about time:
>Time can't be recorded[ you can't return to the same Time that you were in] because time is changing forever.
>Time can't go backward [can't gain a negative value]. it the same as size of a matter or sound of something.
>You can still get closer to zero value[stopping] but you can't go zero[or stop].

Those facts mean that you can live in a very slow or fast timing but not a stop or backward timing.

To sum up, Travel forward in time is true and you can change the speed of it. but travel backward in time is false and it will remain false because time can't gain a negative value.

The only way that we can do travel back in time is only by getting out of the physical world[the world that we live in] and return back in the time that we want and start our life.

Hey Larry,
If you were talking about bionically freezing to travel in the speed of light you will be rapped a part because light is light and can't be changed. And yes you can hide something behind the flare of light but you can't reach the speed of light because the speed of electrons on the atoms will be affected and this my result something unaccepted.
I am living in a black metal and I hope I die for a principle. And of course you still don't know me….
Words are coded in the two sentences above, don't try to decode it.

technically if you change the speed of time, you dont. when you change the speed of time, everything goes equally fast and youll never notice so youll never know if it worked or not

NeonAMD... I was talking about freezing astronauts in order to prevent them form aging because we don't travel at the speed of light. Let's say that you want to fly to the Centauri System, at the current tehnology. It would take a LOT[/b to travel 4.26 lightyears(the distance to Proxima Centauri, the closest star to Earth). And this is where the freezing comes in. The astronauts would be frozen to prevent them from aging during the flight.

I truly don't think that when(not if) we discover the secret of lightspeed traveling we won't need freezing.(altough, 4 years is still a long time to travel).

I meant bionically freezing like you pay like such and such amount now and get unfrozen in like 3006.
Like in Futurama...
man I so want to met Bender!

That's even better! ^_^

But I truly don't think It'd be a good idea... who knows what will happen till "like 3006"

And consider this:

A war starts, all the frosties are destroyed during the war... you stood no chance? Why because you were in a cold metal box :(

dude because of nuclear weapons no one stands a chance you either die from radiation or freeze in nuclear winter
