Converting music to a sci-fi style

Post by Dosser »

I am currently downloading some see shanty midi files. The idea is to convert them to 'futuristic' style music. The advantages are
1) I don't have to write the melodies myself
2) Sea shanties are uncopyrighted
3) they are damned catchy tunes :D
4) it just seems right: everyone likes pirates after all :D

Anyway, how would I do this? My current thinking is to quicken up the songs and maybe add a drum beat or something extra in the background (these shanties were designed to be sung, so don't have much background).

BTW: for anyone interested in old naval songs, there's heaps here

Well first of all you’re going to need some kind of music editing program. Might I sugest Song Vegas. Although that’s only a temporary solution as you can only get a free 30 day trial of it unless you’re willing to fork out $US$450, either that or you can *cough*crack it*cough* Image.

I already have a full, *cough cough* legal copy of cakewalk pro audio: it seems to do the job right.

Just because Mastermind's coughs sometimes sound like things and I am overstressing the word 'legal' doesn't mean wrongdoings are afoot.

I also found the sci-fi music genre is very poorly defined. I downloaded a few midis, ripped my favourites apart using cakewalk and just tried to find some common features before writing my own. Most of them were really bad music (I never knew Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek had such crappy theme songs), but the terminator music was surprisingly good.

www.pyrogame.com/maverick.mid
^there's the first song. Not based off sea shanties (Yet), but it has got similar instruments to the terminator theme.
