Beh, hockey is more violent nowadays (not checking, but fighting and stuff) and I've lost interest in it anyway, so it doesn't matter to me if they ever play another game ever again.

wll, consideribng the players mak millions weither they win or not, I actually think an XFL system would do the NHL good. Im actualy on the side of the owners.

The players only stand to lose out here. The owners are eventually going to get some kind of salary cap. By not playing this season, at least a few teams are probably going to go out of business ... therefore a lot of the lesser-talented NHL players will end up losing their jobs. The player's offer of taking a one-time 24% cut was a nice gesture but ultimately shortsighted and didn't address the real problems.

If they kept it to the Canadian border states and Canada, it might be more worthwhile.

I'm not so sure about states like Texas, Arizona, Florida, Nashville, the Carolinas, etc.

I wonder if they were thinking about a Mexico team or a Cuba team...

Both sides are going to lose big, teams have to pay for the stadiums collecting dust and quite a few have debt that still has to get paid. As far as sports go the only reason people pay the money they do is to see the players play, this isnt a factory where the owners control everything and the workers can be replaced at will.. the players ARE the brand. Players make millions because they win games and bring people to the stadiums so the ownes can milk them for ticket prices, official shirts/hats, and food prices not to mention the money they get from TV rights. Its the owners who are responsible for the outrageous players payscale, which is much lower then baseball, basketball, and football here in the US.

Hence the salary cap that the players union refuses to accept.

There should be a minimum salary plus a cap for each team, so they can buy a superstar or 2 to be competative. You think Wayne gretsky wasnt worth every dollar they paid him when he was in the game? How do you cap the top 10 players in the league that dray the most fans and win the most games? Look at baseball and the Yankees, they have a huge salary base and have to send money to the other clubs because of the franchise cap. Since they pay for the best players they do end up winning alot.. which pays for the players in the first place.

Yeah, #99 was a real crowd-magnet... I think he hauled in $30M/year in the final part of his career with the NYR.

Perhaps the union may be smarter than we think. Maybe corporate communism/socialism is not so hot after all.

You have a situation where the players cant give in because they will end up making nothing while the team owner is swimming in cash, and the team owners wont give in because they think they have the players by the balls.

The final result is nobody will give a dam about hockey anymore (the fans anyway) and neither side will ever see the same cash they had before the strike started. Hockey is not a universal sport like soccer, the players can't make anywhere near the same cash in europe.

Yeah, also there are plenty of substitutes, like the QHL, AHL, and WHL, to satisfy people's desires to watch hockey games.

Go team Canada...
