We should make a schedule to keep it working, and some sort of back-up system to let someone take it over when you're on vacation or whatever...

I would, but I never used IRC in my whole life and therefore I'm the absolute newbie.

OK I downloaded XiRCON 1.0B4 and connected to the Game Hippo chat. I got that much figured out. What next?

I use WinMX as well Wal, or create a group with MSN Chat.

The best option is to get an IRC chatroom, it's way better than WinMX and MSN Chat.

Emmzee, isn't it possible to install an IRC Client for UNIX on your server and let your server host the chatroom? There can still be human ops who have an eye on it.

Having our own server would be a very good thing, IMO, especially given that it'd allow us to host our own bots without having to deal with IRCops elsewhere.

Sorry, not happening :) Besides the fact that I'd have to tinker a bunch with the server, possibly screwing it up (I admit that I don't know a whole bunch besides the basics about Linux) ... there's also the problem of abuse/security associated with running an IRC server. My host expressly discourages running an IRC server for this reason and takes what they feel are necessary precautions ... From my host's AUP:
IRC ACTIVITY
We discourage IRC activity on the 4WebSpace network because it attracts network attacks far more than any other activity. In order to run IRC servers, bots, relays, clients, etc. you must first supply a $500 security deposit to cover costs associated with network attacks. If the server is attacked or is used to attack other hosts, 4WebSpace will keep the deposit and disconnect the server until we receive another deposit.

In that case we'll have to bum someone else's server.

i'm on irc about 23.5 hours a day on average, since it's the summer holiday here. i'd be glad to help out with moderation between, say, 10am and 5pm gmt. i have a knowledge of irc (been using it for a year and a half) and my life is boring enough to warrant something to do like this.
