After a brief delay, DGF is back!

Post by emmzee »

Ah as you may have noticed the forum (and dosgames.com, and dosgamesonline.com, etc) was down today for several hours ... the forum is now back up, and seems to be working okay. If you find any bugs/errors etc please post 'em here. Thanks all ...

If you're wondering what happened, here's what my host had to say about it:
(Dave:) Your 4webspace raq server crashed earlier this afternoon. We attempted a number of different fixes (swapping memory, replacing a dead case fan, swapping the drive to entirely new hardware), but were unable to get it to function again. Further investigation showed that the boot sector of your hard drive had corrupted, and the drive will no longer boot, nor are we able to image it to an undamaged drive. We are, however, able to get the drive to detect when mounted as a slave in another system ...

(Rob:) It looks like the hard drive just cratered basically. There is a brand new one in there now so it shouldn't happen again for at least a few years anyway. The server will no longer boot from the old drive, but it looks the majority of data on it is still good.
Overall I was happy with how the guys (<a href="http://www.4webspace.com">4webspace</a>) handled it :) Too bad there wasn't some kind of backup system in place that could be used to replace all my data automatically ;) But tech support as always was prompt and quite helpful.

Edit: Okay all user website accounts on dosgames.com are now back up too ;)

Yea ;) Although I guess depending on how the raqs are mounted they may have to disconnect them to check the fans? I dunno. At least I got a brand new hard drive and case fan out of the ordeal.

Is the guy who runs it deaf as well? I had my fan replaced last year and it's sort of obvious when it starts to go out... "brrrrrrrRRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAARGSghfhfkjfjrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrRRRRRRRAAArrxfhfdfjfkldhj..." you get the point. ;)

Well it could be that the fan died on that day, and that's also what caused the hard drive problems. ;) I've never worked at a web host so I don't know whether or not its possible to hear a malfunctioning fan in a room with dozens (hundreds?) of buzzing computers ...

Oh it's easy enough-the real problem is trying to figure out which one of the hundreds of computers is making the noise. ;)

I'd assume not fans... that'd be FAR too technical to track... plus there'd probably be bazillions of fans in there too...
