What to add next to play.vg?

Post by emmzee »

So what do you think should be added next to my site www.play.vg ... I was thinking that a rating/comments system could be the next thing. I don't know whether to do it so that people can just leave comments ... or leave comments + rate games ... or just rate games ... or do both but do them separately ... ??

Maybe you could add a top 10 high score option ? It'd add a little bit of competition to the fun not to mention the fact it'd get some crazed 30 year old no-life to spend 16 hours a day there to "keep his high score of 2^87-3 at Defender!!!!" or something else that'd get you sued for damages. :)

Hmm as much as I'd like to have a high scores list for each game (that'd be pretty sweet, lots of repeat traffic!) that's pretty much impossible, given that all these games are made by different people and I have no access to the scores. I could only imagine the results of implementing an "honor system" type high scores list.

I did have one idea that I don't think I've seen anyplace else ... Well okay, I copied it Amazon.com ;) But basically members (logged in thru phpbb? or my own system) could click on games to add them to their "favorites" list, and whenever they came to the play.vg front page it would show up all the games on their favs list for them ... I would have to work in some other features to make it worthwhile for people to signup ... like a comments system for the games or whatever ...

Just thinking out loud here. Or rather, typing what I'm thinking ...

Yeah, I had figured that much... though maybe you could make some deal with the sites providing them? (obviously you couldn't have h/s lists for EVERY game, just some of the really popular ones)

Or you could do as pixal ships and have people send screenshots of their high scores via e-mail to you-though given the popularity of some games there that'd crash your e-mail server in about 3 hours.

A comments/favorites system sounds pretty nice, maybe you could add a "ranking system" that tracks how many times each member has played each game there, going up in rank for every 100 or so plays. It's one way to screw your server for good. ;) (I presume this is possible since you CAN track how many times each game has been played in a day already)

And as long as you're adding members you could throw in a member profile system which would list a bunch of useless facts about members (age, e-mail, favorite game on vg, number of plays and rank (already mentioned above), social security number, hi-res photograph of left thumb, DNA, sexual orientation... etc) that would give your most frequent visitors an identity of sorts.

Hmm I like the idea about the member ranking system ... it gives people more of an incentive to keep coming back to play. Thanks for your thoughts, I'll consider all this stuff some more after this wkend :)

(Mind me reviving this old topic)

Emmzee, did you know that the Lemmings DHTML game you have a link to at Play.vg is actualy illegal? A Dutch guy made this game in a DHTML gamecontest (and won it) but he had no right to use the original Lemmings. He tried to find the developers of Lemmings but he couldn't find them. The Dutch RIAA (called Brein, translated in English: "Brain") forced him to get it offline. He did do this but there were already a lot of mirrors of this game.

I don't think you should remove this game since it's not hosted at your website itself, but one thing you should add is Pumpkins. There has only been released a demo yet, but you can still play this game. It's a Lemmings clone, but the Lemmings have been replaced by Pumpkinhead...
