Ultima 8 on Windows 2000

Post by Annorax »

Hello, sorry if this has been posted here, but I did a search and found no useful information pertaining to this topic.

My system specs are: Windows 2000 w/SP3, AMD Athlon XP 1600, 512 MB PC133 SDRAM, Kyro2 Chipset video card w/64MB RAM, and a Sound Blaster 5.1.

I have been trying to get Ultima 8: Pagan to run on my machine for years. It used to run kind of, but it would always crash. Now, when I run it, it either displays a list of registers and corresponding hex values, and tells me that "DosFreeModule" caused an error, or it will just take me back to the desktop immediately. I am running it with VDMSound, but I don't really care if I have sound or not, I just want this program to run stabley. I've tried multiple AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS configurations but to no avail. I have also applied the U8WIN9X patch, but with 2000 I figured it wouldn't work, and it didn't.

I would appreciate any help anyone has to offer. Thanks.

Try the solutions on this page-

under "Ultima 8 in Windows"

It says it works well in 2000/XP with the right methods

Thanks for the link, but I've already been to that page and tried the suggestions, but to no avail. Maybe my only hope is to build an old machine to play on...
