Help me find this old text only DOS 80's dungeon game

Post by guest »

Ok, I have been trying to remember the name of this game for as long as I can remember. I used to play it with my friend on his computer, probably sometime around 1983-85.

All text, no images whatsoever.

This is how the game was setup:

You would start by entering a 2 or 3 digit number and that number would give you a generated dungeon made up of all X's (I think). Then you would use the cursor keys to slowly navigate through this large probably 30 x 30 grid of X's. Every few moves you would have a random encounter. The text would tell you what you encountered, i.e. werewolf, vampire, dragon, etc... and you would choose from your selection of weapons what you'd use to fight it with. There was probably armor/shields/treasures involved upon besting an enemy. You also would level up, and the enemies would be listed with a level too, I think.

I also remember you started out with the weapon of 'bare hands'.

The other part of this game was that sometimes after a victory, you would get a part of some super weapon, like it would say, "you received 1/5 of the ultimate weapon" or something.

We assumed that you were trying to collect the whole thing and then have some showdown with a final boss. But, we never lasted long enough to see.

When we would play, we always entered in '00' or '000' as our number and we were completely blown away when we realized we could enter a different number and get a completely different dungeon.

I have looked and asked here and there, but hopefully someone here recognizes what I am describing.

THANKS THANKS THANKS THANKS to anyone who can help.

Wow, sounds cool. Not like anything I've tried. Dungeon games that old always send me to Telengard, DND, Rogue, but none of the variants I recall playing was quite like that. But there were LOTS of variants, ports and knock-offs of each of those.

It's also possible it was a type-in magazine game, perhaps?

Zoarre, Apshai, Moria. Or maybe a random maze game with monsters?

Are you sure it was Dos? You might look at c64/appleII/atari games for something that old. Good luck!

Could it be CaveQuest?

You enter a dungeon number, and the graphics are ultra basic, but not quite text as I thought. I was looking for this a while ago and just got lucky!
