Getting NBA Live 95 to install and run in Dosbox 0.74 [Win7]

Post by Triumph »

I have mounted my c:\nba95, and mounted the cd-rom drive to d:

Mounted via:
mount c: c:\nba95
mount d: f:\ -t cdrom

c is the empty folder location where i would like to install the game, and d is the actual cdrom drive on my pc (f is the drive, so I mounted it to D since most typical PC's in the 90's had cd drives at D)

when I change to d: then type install, here is what I get:

DOS/4GW Professional Protected Mode Run-Time Version 1.97
Copywright (c) Rational Systems, Inc. 1990-1994

Please run INSTALL directly from your CD.

then puts me back to d:\nba95

In the dosbox status windows I get this once I type install from the dosbox window:

DosBox switched to max cycles, because of the setting: cycles=auto. If the game runs too fast try a fixed cycles amount in DOSBox's options.

I then modified the conf file, to read cycles=1000 just to slow it down and I get the same error. In the DosBox Status Window nothing shows up then when I type install.

Could anyone help me? or see what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

First question: your OS is?

The reason I did that was because when I start dosbox it starts at a Z drive. So I setup that folder as the C drive, figuring it would install there then.

If you could be so kind to answer the question I could tell you how to correctly mount a virtual C: in dosbox.
If I ask, it's for a reason.

Sorry dosraider, I am doing a bunch of things at once and completely forgot you asked that question.

I am running Windows 7 (32 bit)

AHA ....
Now then, read and apply this to set up dosbox correctly on Win 7:
http://www.dosgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13511

You'll see you don't use "c:\folder" as Win 7 is highly protecting anything on C:, can give a lot of read/write problems.

Next try the install again from D on C in dosbox, reset your "cycles=auto"
Should you still have problems post screenies with your mounts and error message.

ok, I followed that guide, and added these lines to the conf file:

mount c "c:\users\Triumph\oldgames"
mount d f:\ -t cdrom
c:

then I went to d:, typed install and got the same message from the first post.

The file structure of the cd is:
nba95 (Folder)
Univbe (Folder)
install.exe
readme

Hmmmm, can happen, on a laptop or brand PC by any chance?

Will need some moar details ..........
Next question: do you have the original (not a copy) CD?
Or downloaded?

If you have the original CD, do you know how to create a CD image?

I have a laptop here with me now, and have a tower pc at home (both at win 7) and both have the same problem. (Both are HP PC's, the one at home has a better video card)

I am using the original CD.

I do know how to create a CD image, do you want me to create one and upload it somewhere so you can try it and see what you get also?

Create an CD image and mount that directly as CD drive D: in dosbox using the imgmount command, something as:

imgmount d "x:\path\name.iso" -t cdrom

Seeing your mounts it could be something as:
imgmount d "c:\users\Triumph\nba95.iso" -t cdrom

With a bit of luck it will work now (because some laptops and brand PCs use non win default CD drivers, sometimes you need this work around).

THX for the offer to upload, but that isn't really necessary as I have the CD ... 'somewhere', that is if none of my children or grandchildren have stolen it.... *sigh*

I tried that and it still didn't work. I am still getting the same message/error.

There are a few scratches on the bottom of the cd, but I would imagine that if the cd was scratched it wouldn't read at all. Also I would think that when I created the cd image it wouldn't have completed if it couldn't read a section of the cd.

I do have a copy that I made of my a while ago somewhere either at home or at my storage facility, I am going to look for that.

Otherwise I don't know what else it could be??

Can't say I know for sure what's going wrong here,
I do know that NBA live 95 has some weird CD copy protection, but as you're using the original CD that shouldn't be a problem.

Older dosbox versions had a NBA CD and/or image mount problem, but that's been solved by now.

Will have to look if I can find my game CD and try some things out .... *IF* I can find it.....

Otherwise, as you have the original CD you could ask@ http://vogons.zetafleet.com/index.php
That's the home of the dosbox devs, maybe someone over there knows what's going on ....?

Thanks for the help dosraider, I must have messed up the image I made or something, I put the CD in on my tower pc at home and did as you suggested with

imgmount d "x:\path\name.iso" -t cdrom

Then made a new disc image, and it worked first try.

Maybe there was something I was doing wrong with the laptop, anyways just wanted to say that Live 95 works perfectly with dosbox 0.74, even with sound and everything.

So thanks for the help again dosraider.
