Different Filesizes of games???

Post by manstie »

Hi. I found a 2mb version of Sim City 2000 and a 150mb version of Sim City 2000. So... what's the difference?

Can be different reasons.
Dos only, dos/windows, music tracks, no music tracks, ripped to the bone .... whatever.

Also:Many dosgames were first released on floppy and later on CD with some extra stuffs.
Download them and compare what you have.
Or ask where you found them?

More specific for Simcity 2000:
Was first released as floppy version (that will be that 2 MB one)
Later there was a 'enhanced' CD version with better music, SFX, animations and other stuffies. (that will be the larger one)

It's possible you may be looking at a copy of Sim City, as in, Sim City 1. I haven't checked, but I somehow doubt SC2 is 2MB, considering I recall most of my cities that I'd built back when I played it were something like 1.5MB each.. Oh, and huzzah for post searching. I heard you're from Perth.. o.0

ORLY?
Look what I found in my ol'games box:

Original SC2000 on floppies, 2 disk set.
Disk 1: 1.3MB
Disk 2:1.4MB
When installed and compressed with 7Zip : 1.9MB
So yes, SC2000 floppy version and 2MB seems OK.
:)

SC1 fits on one (1) 720KB floppy.

Must have the CD version also somewhere .... somewhere ....

Wow.. o.0

Interesting. I still wouldn't have imagined it to be that small, however. I happen to own a copy of the "Special Collector's Edition" Sim City 2000, and it's just not something that one would imagine to be that small.

Kind of makes me want to go back and play it again.. has been many years.. XD

Back in the day they were pretty hardcore about efficiency. A lot of the greatest games didn't even top out at 1 MB... frikking Starflight (one of the most complex, longest, technologically advanced game of the 80s) fit on 2 5 1/4" floppies. Now that we have unlimited HDD space and cheap distribution (DVDs are very cheap, DLC cheaper still), efficiency is no long a big issue so we get really bloated game sizes.

I think this is sometimes a bad thing. A lot of games, for example, require a processor that is much faster than would really be needed if they weeded out or expedited memory hogging processes. (though I don't know nearly enough re: computer science to know what the big memory hogs are)

Would you believe I've installed the game once again .... and it's still addicting. :)
