Looks like somebody took care of the post. I think a big part of the problem is that we're running an ancient version of phpbb. Not sure if newer versions have anything in place to block spammers, though.

Well, serious spammers will bypass captcha's as well, but simpler ones may be stumped.
You could have a challenge-response query with a simple question to be answered, esp. for guests, like 'what is this website called?' but it is all a hurdle for genuine guests with limited English...so maybe it's not so bad yet.

Guest 'sibericanews', posting spam from russian news site, but cannot even write russian in readable form on the forum.

...IMO, the reply post also comes close to spam sometimes....

Guest user 'AdrianKn' selling accounts at several services that are normally free.
Likely the ones offered are hacked existing accounts, to be used for malicious purposes.

A user with link in sig and profile:
http://www.dosgames.com/forum/profile.p ... le&u=13176

Posted this:
http://www.dosgames.com/forum/viewtopic ... 972#123972

Not sure if spambot or spammer, 'cause he's addressing Quadko in his post. A new type of bot algorithm perhaps?

[Edit] Another one slipped under the radar a while ago:
http://www.dosgames.com/forum/profile.p ... le&u=13124

I'm leaving its posts for the admins to delete.

Was thinking that looked rather spambot-ish; picking up a poster name seems in same ballpark as quoting threads.

Yes, googling for the name & location resulted in some other similar posts
and forum accounts also made yesterday, so I'd guess it's just a budding spam-bot.

A returning spambot 'shgensnesn' making multiple posts of nonsense.

I recognize the link in his profile, though last time it used another name.
I see it's prolific on other forums as well...
I guess it's selling some sort of football related coins, I don't want to know.

Another (old 2011) copy-paste bot: 'liuvincent19'

http://www.dosgames.com/forum/profile.p ... le&u=10750

all it's copy-paste postings:

http://www.dosgames.com/forum/search.ph ... uvincent19

---

...and then the funniest copy-paste boy yet to follow-up: 'Segaboy'
copying a warning about spambots from/to the same thread...

http://www.dosgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16994

I like Wally's reply :-)

Well, that spambot hasn't bothered to update its profile, signature or posts with any links or anything for about four years now. If the admins want they can delete its account along with all posts with a single click so it's up to them to decide.

Oh, and the suspected bot 'peter_sv' that was seen previously seems to have re-registered with a new name, 'benty', making an almost-making-sense post, and still carrying the same link in its profile.

http://www.dosgames.com/forum/profile.p ... le&u=13181
http://www.dosgames.com/forum/search.ph ... thor=benty

This one is also seen freshly registered at another forum, promoting its website, which is said to host games for enhancing typing skills; almost relevant here.
The querying posts here look a bit strange though.

http://forum.boomzap.com/showthread.php?tid=2597

note the same sentence parts, 'awaiting your hopeful reply' etc. like a misdirected business mail.

Yes, benty's post was a facepalm. I say we ban anyone who's "never heard of RPG's" on general principle, spambot or not.

What gamer doesn't know what a Rocket Propelled Grenade is, anyway! So many WWII games out there!
