Back in Cali... *sigh*

Very very very hot here. Just did a 10KM hike wearing 110lbs of armor and gear yesterday. Needless to say, I'm looking forward to being done with this shit next month. At least I get weekends off here. (I'm at the USMC School of Infantry right now)

On the bright side, I'm my fireteam's SAW gunner. The m249 is one of God's greatest creations. Too bad it weighs 20 fucking pounds.

*goes off to haul around more gear*

Well, he's actually a Marine--not a Soldier--which is a part of the US Navy. (but don't tell them that, they get mad. lol)
AFAIK, the proper "reaction to ambush" technique is to charge the attacker like hell and pray to God that you make it out alive. Because, if you get caught in an ambush, you're essentially screwed.

We're just the sexy part of the Navy.

We've spent many, many hours training for ambush scenarios. (since that's the primary type of engagement we see nowadays) It basically involves instantly orienting all firepower in the direction of the attack, and then buddy rushing towards the ambushers. i.e, fire team leader (with a 203) and A-gunner sprint 30 m forward and then take cover while rifleman and Saw Gunner (that's me) put down heavy suppressive fire, then we rush while our buddy's put down fire until we close with/overrun the enemy. Taliban are undisciplined as fuck, so 99% of the time they start running when they see a squad of marines running TOWARDS them instead of away... and once they run, they're easy targets. :)

Weapon accuracy is a huge part of this as well. If you're constantly laying down suppressive fire (which we do) and gain fire superiority, the enemy won't have time to sight in, so any rounds they do shoot are pathetically inaccurate. The AK-47s they shoot are worthless after about 100 m or so, the grouping is that bad. OTOH, I hit 10 out of 10 headshots from 500 meters with a m16a4, ironsights. Hitting a target running straight away from 100 or 200 m with a scope is rediculously easy.

Well I wouldn't say stopped altogether but ya I've been really slacking off lately. The trouble is there's barely any content left on the internet even worth spamming with these days. :(
