Post by Oz » Sun Sep 15, 2002 8:04 am

you forgot to add qbasic. that is probably the best game creation tool ever! it's great because you can create serius programs as well as games.

I really didn't like QBASIC. It sucked too much for my games. It was limiting when it came to graphics. :blah: I totally gave up on it.

But it is much harder to do ASCII graphics. You can't point and click like ZZT. :blah: :blah: No BASIC for me. :blah:

....You can't point and click like ZZT....
You mean you use the mouse in ZZT?

Am I the only one here that doesn't use the mouse in ZZT?

Yes. You are the only one. You are alone in the world of non-mouse-users. I pity you.

Actually, I know very few people who use the mouse at all in ZZT. You can't really do too much with it other than click to place whatever is already the current pattern (actually, that IS all you can do with it).

I think John means that you can't just go around placing stuff like you can in ZZT.

That is EXACTLY what I mean. I don't use the mouse in ZZT, either.

On the topic of QBasic, does anyone have any game ideas for me? Try to keep them simple!

ya, my dos comp.

caractacus

basic is good

Post by caractacus » Tue Dec 24, 2002 1:44 am

you people who only use point-and-click are veeery limited in my experience. sure, point-and-click programs are good for a dabble, but they're generally slow and rather limiting. most can be used to create only a few types of games. how can you invent new genres and come up with new ideas with that?

basic is good because, though it is more limited than, say, c++, it is easier and less time consuming. so it's somewhere in between point-and-click and advanced programming.

i have been using basic for years, and i have found that qbasic does have very limited memory, 32K, which really doesn't matter if you use a compiler. i use it to create fighting games, strategy, rpg.

(well *embaressed* i must confess that i never finish a single game, but that's just laziness on my part)

...if you had read it properly, you would've seen that we wern't talking about any point and click game creators, ZZT does use a mouse....but it's crap so it doesn't count.

I don't think zzt was meant to do the things that qbasic or c++ does. If it was meant to do all that, it would be Game Maker (which is another point-and-click game creator, except it can make many differen't kinds of games. I forgot the link, but you can get it from Game Hippo ;) ........as well as a whole enchilada of others..........mmm, mexican food........er, I mean, yeah................)

QBASIC games CAN be done... it's just not easy

Post by Homz » Fri Jan 10, 2003 2:45 pm

You can make OK games in QBASIC, but it's quite difficult however

(and pretty easy too!). To see some QBASIC games, logon to: http://www.qbasic.com

That site was shut down a long while ago, but I think most things still work and the forum is still used a lot.

I suppose a more correct word for the current site status would be "abandoned", and with it being a popular domain name, it still gets a lot of traffic.
