HAHahaha.. ah man... I remember that part had me nearly as frustrated as the part you're going to be facing once you do get through the trapdoor. To save you frustration later, you should have these items in your inventory already:

Oil Can - found in the shed
Pen Knife - found under the stairs with the whistle
Whistle - found under the stairs *don't blow it just yet or the dog will eat you*
Rubber Bung - in the mad scientist's room; when you shrink then get it off the table behind the door to that messed up box

Anyway, moving on: put the oil you got from the shed on the bolts; then undo the bolts (make sure you type 'undo bolts' else it won't work).

Thats why you need the whistle though... blow it and they get all screwed up and fly to the edges of the screen.

Just don't forget, before you go to the next room after the bats, SAVE THE GAME! The next room is pretty dangerous! ... you'll need to restore.
