REAL DOS: Qbasic, some games run slowly.

Post by ProjectBlack »

Got the PC up, VGA graphics going, mouse is working, CD-ROM is working...

...but for some reason, half of the games run veeeeeeeeeeeeery slow. I mean, they ran at normal speed on my old 486: Why would they be lagging with a Pentium II?

Prince of Persia - Perfect
Flashback: Quest for Identity - Perfect
Bill and Ted - Perfect (though I don't know how to play)
Wayne's World - Slow
QBasic Games - Slow

Am I not loading something correctly at boot up?

Pentium II 400Mhz MMX
64MB SD-RAM

QB runs really crappy on most WinXP systems, ESPECIALLY when Service pack 2 is added in.

I'm sorry... I wrote "REAL DOS" and forgot to mention that this is a box set aside specifically for DOS gaming. It's using MS DOS 6.22

Too add more titles tested to the list:

Quarantine - Runs super fast (No option to slow it)
Blood - Works perfectly, even in 640x480 VESA mode
Altered Destiny - After running executable, I get "OUT OF MEMORY" error.
Street Rod 2 - Works perfect
WWF Wrestlemania the Arcade - Works perfect

Yeah, no windows at all. Boots right to good ol' C:\

Hmm... I take it that nobody has any ideas then?

Additionally, a graphical adventure called "Alternate Destiny" immediately goes to a screen that says "NOT ENOUGH AVAILABLE RAM".

1. Move Smartdrive line after MSCDEX and add 1024 to it.
2. SET TEMP=C:\TEMP
3. Add C:\DOS to path line.
4. DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE AUTO RAM after HIMEM.
5. BUFFER=30
6. DOS=HIGH, UMB
NO Windows, NO DOSBox, DOS!

Say, ProjectBlack, you live in Arlington TX? Well I'll be damned, I'm only a few miles away from you.
