Lunicus, Win3x, DosBox 0.74, failed cd check

Post by zwtodd »

Hi,

I recently found a game I have been trying to find / remember for years now: Lunicus. I found it on Amazon, got it today, and have spent about 5 hours trying to get it to run.

I have DosBox 0.74 installed, and Windows 3.1 installed using DosBox. Win31 works fine when installed.

I install Lunicus in Win31 using the CD. I have also tried making an image, mounting it in daemontools, and installing from there. Either way I do it, the installation seems to work perfectly fine. The installation of Win32 (and the freecell game) seems to go fine as well.

When I attempt to play the game, the game cannot find the cd drive.

So, I started googling...Here is what else I tried:

Making an iso of the cd and using imgmount.

Copying the contents of the CD to a directory and mounting that directory with -t cdrom.

Also, after that WIN32 files finish installing, there is a window that says that it must use "share.exe" and to run it before running windows or add it to autoconfig. I could not find a sharefile, or one on the internet. I did find fakeshare via a tutorial, but that did not work either.

I have installed win31 and lunicus several (hundered it seems) times today trying to figure this out. I found a thread from 2008 on this forum with the same problem, but not with any answers that I have no tried.

Anyone have an advice for to get this game running right? If you need anymore info on what I have done or not done, I will answer asap.

Don't know that game.
No idea how to solve that problem.
Isn(t there a command line option ( *.PIF for Win3?) to avoid it? Share should only be needed for multiplayer. (->>readme ???)

I can tell you that share.exe is a MsDos executable, loaded in config.sys with
INSTALL= C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE
Not included in dosbox for copyright reasons.

Otherwise you could ask@ http://vogons.zetafleet.com/index.php
That's the home of the dosbox specialists.

Also:
Care to tell us how exactly you did that? Used prog?
Mount line? CD image format (ISO/BIN-CUE?)
As for deamon tools: can't advise that; best is imgmount directly in dosbox.

Ran into problems in dosbox/W3 ànd VPC2004/W3.

But good news is: runs fine in VPC2007/W98SE.

So if you have access to a Win compy your easiest way to solve problems and to play the game will be VPC2007/W98SE.

Game seems to run fine with DOSBox+W3.11+Win32S (I only played for a few minutes though).
share.exe is not needed.

What was the problem with your W3.1, dosraider?

Graphics were extremely bad, blurred colors, mouse trail ....
Didn't look any further into it as it runs fine in VPC-W98SE.
I use W3-WfW. Maybe that's the prob, don't know, can be the video driver...??
I don't think I gonna spend more time trying to run it in dosbox/W3 or to find out why it bugged with my setup.
OP has two posibilities to solve his probs, should be enough.

Good to know it is at least possible to run the game on modern hardware.
