Mortal Kombat 3 on Win XP

Post by bugmenot »

In a nostalgic mood I installed MK3 on my system back again. However, as you can probably guess: Windows XP doesn't support this game anymore. I get this notice:

Image

Translated from Dutch it says:
16-bits MS-DOS-subsystem

MK3.EXE
The NTVDM-CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:089c IP:0000 OP:ff ff ff ff 40 Choose Close to end the application.
I tried DOSBox as well. It showed the right start up screen but then I got the notice that the program didn't find the proper disk in the CD-ROM drive. While it was in there.

Any ideas?

Yeah, while in dosbox, mount your CD-ROM drive with

mount d [your CD-ROM drive] -t cdrom

It is actually working. This is where my seemingly endless search finally concludes.

Hopefully this topic makes his way to google in order to help many others like me. MK3 was a classic.

Thank you very much, Larry Laffer.

Maybe it had worked also, if you had ran it under a Win95 compatibility mode...

IIRC it was also on Windows but for God's sake correct me if I'm wrong. And it was also for SNES, download an emulator bla bla bla...

SNES, SEGA Genesis, Game Gear, GameBoy and DOS. At least these are the ones I played.

And you could always go to mobygames.com :P

Plus that ROMs are illegal, and yeah, you pirate, you!

It didn't work under win95 compatibility mode and I tried a dozen of emulators - I didn't manage to run any of those with success. Quite frustrating because I have the original/legal copy of the game (had to blow the dust off the box).

But it runs great now with DOSbox. Thanks for the support.

MK3 in XP

I too dusted off my unopened MK3 and tried it with compatability with no luck.
I tried the term "mount" but windows states it didn't recognize it. Therefore I ran a search of my hard drive for "mount" and found a few mountain and other type things, but did find a "mountvol". I checked its help and it was talking about mounting an NTFS drive. Any help on that command. Thanks for the info.

Scott, the mount command is part of DOSBox:

http://www.dosbox.com

Download & install that, should help you get MK3 working. :)

And before you ask how to get dosbox running the game:

If on XP:

If on Vista:
