90s World Building Game [AlphaWorld / Active Worlds]

I am trying to find/remember an old game (90's?) that was a world building type game. I have looked up minecraft type games but it is never listed (or at least none of the games look like it or sound like it)

There were no limits to how large or what you could build. You would log in and start out at a base of some sort with portals to other users areas (if those users provided a portal).. or just random portals to other worlds. You could either start "walking" or take a random portal to find a spot you want to build and begin building whatever you wanted. You could also visit other users creations.

There were item databases (I believe user provided) of things like manhole covers and trees and bushes etc. You could build above and below ground (but it was pretty glitchy below ground).

I played the hell out of this and build some massive structures. I am certain it is no longer a thing but it is driving me nuts what it was called and when it was released.

It was a virtual world builder, not actually a game.
