Super Dos?

Post by Homz »

I don't use Super Dos or know what it is. I just run my DOS games off of Windows. Can someone tell me, is there a better way to run DOS games? I should probably apologize :( , since I have probably grieved you all by using Windows (or maybe I haven't) .
"You believe me," I said gratefully.
"Of course I do," and he held out his hand. "I believe everything out of the common. The only thing to distrust is the normal."

Even though I am a fan of games that run in DOS, I would die if I didn't use Windows.

No one os is the end all be all of operating systems. Each OS and platform has its good points and bad points.

I run DOS , Win311, Win98/ME, Win2k along with a few mac's (os 7,8,9), amiga's (A500/A1200) and other platforms.

The only OS type I havnt got into much is Unix/Linux and its derivatives.

I'm intrigued by "newer" versions of DOS but I always end up asking myself why I mainly use DOS in the first place. And the answer is to run old PC games. To get maximum compatibility with those games it is necessary to try to replicate the environment they were written for (and in) as closely as possible. For these purposes Microsoft's DOS versions will always be superior.

Additionally I use Arachne sometimes. Once again MS-DOS 6.22 is a safe choice since the code is extensively tested with it.

I mean I like newer operating systems and the features they gift us. I have Windows XP installed on this multi-boot box. But I never use it since, for the games I play, Windows 98 is a better platform. And I suspect if I installed a newer DOS too, I would end up just using MS-DOS 6.22 for similar reasons.

Best wishes to a fellow DOS user. B)
Well I have this Mad Scientist inside that loves to screw with things. For a while it was DOS. I loved Dosshell and batch files and reformatted any Windoze floppies given to me. Now I resell PC hardware at auction and still use DOS to get things going often.

Now if you are a real DOS nut you will have likely run into 4DOS, a suite of exquisite DOS utilities. Really allows you to dig deep and run deadly! I've got a copy around somewhere. If not, Filelibrary.com will have a fresh ZIPfile.

I'm going to try a little resurrect spell on this topic.:karate:

A bit of different tack though:

The idea is to add or replace standard DOS programs and files with improved versions availible on the net and various OS disks. Example: Win98se has most MS-DOS 7 files in C:\Windows\Command\ and on the CD there are some goodies in the Win98 folder. I'll get a list posted here soon.

Now the "Superizing" of DOS is to use the following command line aps that do a superior job to the MS ones:

XXCOPY16.EXE (comes in the XXCOPY download at www.xxcopy.com)
FDISK.EXE (improved by MS to properly "see" volumes >64 GB but <137 GB. Get at Microsoft. I noted there are several "Super Fdisks" in a Google search but haven't had a moment to test them.)
TFORMAT.EXE (true name: SmartFormat 2.1 by Vinay Pai at http://members.tripod.com/ieeecrce/inno ... 9/tformat/ It formats a 1.44 floppy as 1.72 MB and resurrects some floppies that are supposedly bad.)
AVAST! 7.x (DOS antivirus for the modern age. It's free at www.Avast.com --home of one of the best Windows AVwares.... also free.)

Now, who out there has a few to add to the list? ;)

Another item, free DOS ware: http://home.att.net/~short.stop/freesoft/z_2nd.htm

I wrote this poll for stand alone DOS OS's 3 years ago and wished I'd done a better job of it. Also, I did try to change the poll a couple times but the edit screen doesn't allow this once ONE vote is cast.

In some ways I consider DR-DOS 7 (now FreeDOS if I recall) a Super DOS. Hence the 1st vote checkoff kinda covers it.

DOS 8 in Win ME? If you start a DOS box in ME and type: ver (enter), what does it say?

Anyways, if you use DOS in Windows, then your OS is Windows (from the purist point of view. See "DOS 8..." note above). It's automatically taking care of all the things that made DOS a manual OS. Manual OS? Yes, where you control everything. You must know and/or study the books and if you screw up something doesn't work right. Letting "Windoze" (as we say) handle this is copping out. It's often a great puzzle to solve and logic is the path to success. Ever use Memmaker trying to get the most "clear RAM under 640kb" to run a game that took 612kb to even start? Ever found it didn't quite do what you wanted and then spent an evening tweeking, reloading and out-smarting the thing? It's game in itself!! Often infuriating, too! :shifty:

I should note that if you had copied out all the only DOS files and apps from Windows to build a MS-DOS 7.x stand alone OS in a separate directory (called on a dual boot) or PC (preferable for simplicity and testing), you have essentually made a base form of Super DOS. Adding improvements for functionality (like pulling various forms of DOSSHELL or expanded editors and the like into your OS) is "filling out" the OS and personalizing it.

make a boot disk in win me and boot off it then type ver (it will say dos 8.00) ive also seen dos 7.10 (comes with win98se) for sale for i think 10 AUD but that was ages ago.

when we only had a laptop that had win 3.11 we could run all dosgames (out at the time)... it was mad... i wander what version dos it was.

Running from a boot disk will give the true DOS version, because you aren't under Windows,... which is my point here (not to be handheld by Windoze). Hence, if you wish you could build a basis for a Super DOS, this might be a starting point. The files on this basic boot disk are the core and heart of DOS: without them you don't get anywhere. ;)

Now cull as much DOS as you can out of the Win ME install CD and you have a set of files that will fit on a couple floppies like old DOS, but without the extraction bull that MS, et al, used as "protection". Just use a basic XCOPY batchfile if you want to make an install/setup routine (or you can edit the install/setup file from an old DOS floppy set to do your bidding). :)

As I recall, in any Win 3.1 or 3.11 you are using an MS-DOS 6.0 to 6.22, depending on which date the disks were made. Win 3.0 might be off of DOS 5 (I've never looked). Any of them will likely not have some DOS apps because Windows was supposed to do that for you better (ahem!!). My fave DOSSHELL was first to go.
