Nethack

Post by Larry Laffer »

Anybody still play* this beast?

Been burning daylight with this for a while now(at least till a nymph nicked my boots of levitate when I was over water. Ragequit ensued) and was wondering what ugaiz had to say about it.

*Cool gamers telnet to nethack.alt.org

Do you use PuTTY? If so, what are your font options when running in fullscreen? I've yet to find one that works very well.

Nope, I use the telnet.exe that comes with Windows XP, works just fine for me(uses only the upper half of the screen in fullscreen but I always thought that was the intended behavior).

Single player Nethack (what I usually play) is total fullscreen. Looking for a setting that will emulate that behavior... PuTTY does it, but the result stretches the font and is rather jarring. I'm asking on the IRC channel now.

If, on the other hand, you were to use telnet.exe, you could change the program's font/size like you would for any DOS/Command Prompt program.

Yes, Putty allows that as well, that's not the issue.

http://nethack.wikia.com/wiki/PuTTY seems to cover more of what I was addressing. The CP437 gave me what I was looking for graphically. I think I'll just play half screen for the rest and get used to it.

Uh, you obviously didn't even read that article:
Kicking down doors exercises dexterity and - in case of success - strength.
Way to demonstrate your literacy.

Urr... I was... testing you, yea, to make sure you actually knew! :shifty:

Had 3 uni exams today, no time for fun and games yesterday. :( Will probably be online sometime later today(after some well-deserved C&C Renegade skirmishes)

So, I finally got display options that are bearable. Ended up having to edit my user .cfg on their server via telnet to create my own charset. (which is, btw, far, far more difficult to do than something that simple has any right to be) It's not quite what I wanted, but I can finally play without getting headaches:

Maybe playing with the single player layout for so many years has spoiled me. *meh*

I have Nethack on my computer, just have played it in a few years. But, too me, it's still one of the best Roguelike adventure game. Heck, I even have Hack which is the predecessor to Nethack.
