Here, download this copy of AUTOEXEC.NT, backup the one you already have, then copy that one into the system32 folder. See if that helps.

That looks like you might have corrupted XP/DOS configuration files.

I've never dealt with them specifically before so I'm not sure how to help you with those in particular, unless you reformat and reinstall Windows thus resetting them back to their default settings.

DOSBox is an emulator, you can try that if you already haven't. http://dosbox.sourceforge.net Otherwise you can right-click the game's EXE file, click Properties, tinker with the settings there, maybe you might change the right setting to get it working. From my POV, it would be AMD's responsibility to be 100% compatible with Socket 7 standards.

Use the first one (ESS). From personal experience, ESS tends to be a decent sound card. As for your other question, it would appear that DOS music in the MIDI/Adlib format is not supported. Unless the NT/2000/XP MIDI driver supports DOS games, you will not hear MIDI-based music. I hate to be picky, ...

i430TX is the real Intel. In fact, it was Intel's final (and second best) chipset for Pentium-class motherboard.
