The downloads section of Theodor Lauppert's Game Galley has quite a few Win16 and Win32 demo, shareware and free games, maybe you'll find what you're looking for there.

Apparently, the original name of the Lords of the Realm demo archive is simply LORDS.ZIP.

[Edit] Located yet another version of Lords of the Realm demo. This one is smaller in size:
ftp://ftp.chatnfiles.com/Giga-Games/Gig ... /LORDS.ZIP

What about Blade Warrior? It's sure very dark, although the character height might be more than what you said it should be.

There's a pretty old game called Targhan. There are trees and it is very dark.

I also thought of DragonHeart: Fire & Steel.

Was it a top-down action game like Mageslayer, or was it limited to standing on the platform and throwing enemies off it?

Thanks for mentioning Inner Worlds ! I remember reading a discussion about this game some time ago, it looks very nice (the werewolf girl protagonist is also rather unusual). [Edit] Managed to find the shareware version on cd.textfiles.com, it's not zipped, just a folder with all installation files ...

Personally I can't help you but you could browse the Anime/Manga RPG games using the MobyGames Game Browser filter:

With some luck, you'll find what you're looking for :)

I also thought that it could be Abuse, from the description, but then again, it could be the space episode of the first Duke Nukem game as well.

Re: looking for more dos games

1 was a really ugly 3d game like wolfenstein you could shoot bullets(sprites) and you could collect stuff. "Ugly" isn't a very helpful clue (tastes differ, you know), but both Depth Dwellers and Quiver have visuals that aren't exactly stunning. Also a lot of Pie in the Sky games have rather mediocr...

Sounds like Halloween Harry a.k.a. Alien Carnage:

[Edit] Except it's not 3D. But it was published by Apogee, so the shareware version was very likely to get in the extras section on the Duke3D CD.
