Just a note: While DOSBox is excellent, if the game can be run on the XP command prompt/NTVDM, that makes it much simpler to deal with, and it also saves CPU/RAM since that's one less program running (DOSBox itself). The best attitude is try to get the game running on XP itself, and if that won't do...

Perhaps the serial port ribbons might be faulty. Try replacing them if you can.

Or if you're sort of a stuntman, clear your CMOS with a program like CMOSPWD, and allow the BIOS to reset to factory defaults, that might do it.

Both of those games use DOS4GW, a 32-bit DOS extender. DOSBox is not very good with 32-bit games (yet) so your best bet is to find some other way other than DOSBox. (like real-mode DOS/Virtual PC/etc.)
