I don't know about black & white, but the best action game made with that isometric perspective has got to be Crusader:No Remorse & No Regret.

But there were lots of isometric games going way back. You might try a list of those.

Sounds like a cheap knock-off of TES1 Arena.

When you say 3rd person, do you mean "from above" like Diablo / Torchlight, or do you mean "over the shoulder / butt-in-face" like Tomb Raider / Console RPGs?

I've looked at CyberDogs a few times, but haven't tried it yet - glad to hear it's fun enough to have great memories!.

This sounds like it might be an ASCII based game, but I'm not coming up with anything from memory or google.

Text adventure, or graphic adventure? Point and click like LucasArts and later, or still typing commands like Sierra?

In the old days (and actually more recently, too, though I'm not sure the latest versions of windows will let you do it directly) you could still draw anywhere on the screen, not just in your own window. Basically you told the drawing code that "the desktop" was your window, and it worked....
