DIAMAZE    Herringbone Software,  1990
Rating: 3 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
DIAMAZE is a simple but sublimely relaxing game where the goal is to collect as many diamonds in a mine before your lamp runs out. There are no enemies, so you are racing only against the clock. The monochrome text based 'graphics' won't impress anyone, but the game could be fun to play in quick bursts since there is not much pressure involved, or for someone who does not have the reflexes to play fast-paced games. (Tiny file size too)

Diamonds    C & L Software,  1994
Rating: 3 1/2 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
This interesting puzzle game is similar to another game I've played ... I just can't think of what that game is. The object is to guide your bouncing ball around the levels, changing your active color by touching key blocks, and breaking blocks that are the same color as the last "key block" you touched. (It makes sense when you start playing.) Average graphics, but fun gameplay.

Dosmine    Dan Vancina  1993
Rating: 3 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot unavailable ]
Simply put, it's a DOS version of the Windows Minesweeper game. Here the game is played in text mode, unlike the popular Windows version, and there aren't many options to set. (Hint, press F1 while running the game to see the "Help" menu.)

Dotso    Soleau Software,  1995
Rating: 3 1/2 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
This is a version of a popular game that people often play with a pen and paper. (At least, I used to.) Players take turns drawing lines on a grid, trying to make boxes. The computer is pretty tough! (As you can see from the screenshot!) Of course, it might just be the fact that I'm too dumb to play this game ... :)

Ducks    Tim Furnish,  1999
Rating: 4 1/2 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
Remember how addictive Lemmings was when you first played it? Well, Ducks borrows many aspects from Lemmings, but I find it even more enjoyable to play, because unlike Lemmings (where the little green-haired freaks move at their own pace), here YOU decide when/where they move. Excellent idea! Great implementation, too: Great graphics and sound effects!

Fairy Godmother    Soggybread Software,  1992
Rating: 3 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
This is definitely a unique puzzle game. In it you play a fairy godmother ("Woah, couldn't have figured that out on my own", you say) who must collect magic coins on each board while avoiding killer crabs. (!?!) Anywho, the idea is to use your magic wand to "copy" objects and create them elsewhere to allow you to progress. (It makes sense when you actually play the game. Well, not the evil crabs stuff, but the magic wand stuff.) Neat game.

Fiddle    Doug Beeferman,  1992
Rating: 3 1/2 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
An interesting puzzle game with many different levels, despite the lack of great graphics and sound effects. The object is to match up different shapes in order to cosntruct perfect squares/rectangles of predetermined sizes. There are various tangible (storebought) versions of this game, but this one is easier to play and includes a lot more different puzzles.

Funballs    Steve Petrovits Jr.,  1995
Rating: 3 1/2 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
An innovative puzzle game where you attempt to match a pattern of balls that is shown on the right side of the screen. It's difficult to explain, but simple to learn to play. A nice, relaxing, challenging game.

Grid Poker    Jeff Anderson,  1995
Rating: 4 stars  Freeware  [ Screenshot ]
A really cool, innovative idea. The object is to fill a 5x5 grid with playing cards, trying to make the best possible poker hands going across and down the square. Take a look at the screenshot. It may use basic ASCII graphics (the mark of a true classic DOS game) but it's really innovative, and fun to play, since playing a game doesn't take much time at all. Small zipfile, too!

Gripple    Doug Beeferman,  1991
Rating: 2 1/2 stars  Freeware  [ Screenshot ]
The author claims that this simple color-matching puzzle game is based on an old pocket game of the same name by a company called "M-Squared Incorporated". I can verify this fact, because I own the very same (annoying) game. :) Actually it's not a bad game at all. Basically you match colors by rotating the pieces around ... look at the screenshot and you'll see what I mean. As usual with puzzle games, poor graphics, no sound, etc. but it might be a fun diversion for puzzle fans.

Heartlight PC    Epic Megagames,  1993
Rating: 2 1/2 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
If you enjoy pushing-puzzle games, you will probably enjoy Heartlight. It is indeed light-hearted puzzle fare from Epic Megagames (one of their earlier games). The graphics are okay for a puzzle game (VGA), and there seems to be a good number of different levels to try. (Note: You have to run SETUP.EXE before you can play. Also, if the game seems to run very slowly, try running SETUP.EXE and selecting NO SOUND. That fixed the problem on my computer, at least.)

Helious    Albino Frog Software,  1993
Rating: 4 stars  Freeware  [ Screenshot ]
In this interesting puzzle game, you control a blue balloon that is slowly losing air. (Although I always thought it was a ball of ice that was slowly melting.) You move throught the levels collecting gems; the catch is, as you move you lose air in the balloon, making your balloon smaller to navigate through tighter areas, but if you run out of air the game is over. A neat idea that is well executed with decent EGA graphics, but its a very difficult game.

Hero's Heart    Everett Kaser,  1994
Rating: 3 1/2 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
Hero's Heart is a traditional pushing, block moving puzzle game. The object varies from level to level, but usually consists of collecting all of the hearts on the level and getting to the green exit. There are lots of similar games out there (graphics are minimalist, sound is nonexistent) but if you enjoy this type of game, get ready for lots of difficult puzzles.

Hexxagon    Software Creations,  1993
Rating: 5 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
An extremely enjoyable puzzle game. The object is to takeover the gameboard (which can be edited by the user and saved) with marbles (gems?) of your own color. It includes a single player vs. computer option (with three skill levels) and also a two player option. Definitely fun to play, as it's got a really nice looking interface, and, on the 'easy' setting, even I can sometimes win! :) (Note: You can also play Hexxagon online!)

Incredible Machine, The    Dynamix,  1992
Rating: 4 stars  DEMO!  [ Screenshot ]
I must stress that this is a DEMO version of the classic game The Incredible Machine, but it gives new players a taste of what this game has to offer. The game consists of using certain provided objects (gears, wheels, candles, a monkey riding a bicycle ...) to accomplish a certain task (get all the balls into the hoops, scare a cat, pop all the balloons ...) in each level. It's great fun, and so is building your own weird machines in freeform mode (unfortunately disabled in the demo). To get the full game legally, your best bet is probably to search for The Incredible Machine on eBay.

Jelly Bean Factory, The    SUMMIT Software,  1991
Rating: 3 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
Tetris is one of the most successful video games ever created, and it spawned many imitators and knock-offs. Some were good, others were not (Hatris, anyone?). The Jelly Bean Factory is essentially a clone of one of the better ones, Sega's Columns. The object here is to get 3 or more same-colored beans aligned to clear them from the well as more and more pieces continue to fall. Overall the game is well presented but doesn't add much to the classic Columns formula.

Laser Light    Pixel Painters,  1994
Rating: 3 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
Laser Light is a unique puzzle game where the object is to use various mirrors and other objects to guide a laser to hit a target. By placing and moving around mirrors you can control the flow of the laser. This game features an interesting concept, as well as decent graphics and sound effects. The puzzles quickly become difficult and the interface during the game is not the best but overall it is a generally fun new experience for puzzle game fans.

Lemmings    Psygnosis,  1991
Rating: 4 1/2 stars  DEMO!  [ Screenshot ]
Most people have probably played (or at least seen) some version of the classic Lemmings game designed by DMA Design. The object is to guide your "Lemmings" (actually little green-haired guys) to the level exit. To do so you assign your Lemmings jobs, like digger, or bridge-builder, to guide them past the various obstacles. A classic puzzle game that can sometimes also require quick reflexes! :) (Notes: This is the demo version of the game. Also this game did not seem to like my video card, for some reason I was unable to see some of the icons in the game. I do not know of a fix for this problem.)

Loader Larry    Soleau Software,  1993
Rating: 4 stars  Shareware  [ Screenshot ]
Combining puzzle elements with some light jumping action, Loader Larry is a unique kind of puzzle game. The goal is simply to get Larry to the exit of the room by carrying and pushing boxes around. It's tougher than you'd think! And there are lots of little varients to keep the action going. Pretty good game, passable graphics, PC beeper sounds. ('course you don't need great graphics for a puzzle game, do ya?)
