The oddly named Meteor is a really great action/adventure game. As a soldier, you must complete various missions. There can be different objectives, but most end up being sorta like "kill all the guys dressed in red". (Your guy is dressed in green.) That's okay though because the game's graphics, sounds, and gameplay are all great! Lots of shooting/explosions, definitely a fun game for action fans. The game even includes an editor to create your own missions and lets you edit the graphics!
Mine Bombers is a takeoff of the popular "Bomberman" type game, where the object is to run around a playing field dropping bombs, trying to take out your opponent(s). Mine Bombers does add some new gameplay elements, however, such as the fact that you can purchase weapons before the battle starts, and the playing field is bigger than usual. (This makes the players seem quite tiny, however.) The graphics are pretty good, as well.
This is a two-player battle game in which you and a buddy fight it out using various weapons. The levels you fight on are platform-type in design. The game plays well, but doesn't look very good at all. There are some SB effects, but they're nothing special. It's not a bad game, but you'll need to have a 2nd player with you, because there is no option to play the computer or over the 'net.
I was a bit unsure of which category to put this in, as it's sort of a hybrid action/adventure/maze game. It features some nice graphics and sound effects, and an interesting variety of puzzles. It also includes an editor so you can make your own levels! Not to my personal taste, but it's definitely a quality product.
Of all of the Bomberman clones I've seen so far, this one is closest to Bomberman in terms of graphics, powerups, gameplay ... everything! It plays very well, looks great, and if you're lucky enough to be on a network, you can play with up to eight players at once! Two-player mode is available for stand-alone PCs. (Note: Whenever I exit this game in Windows, it locks up my computer. So you may want to try running it from DOS to avoid problems.)
Nibbler is a variation of the popular Nibbles/Snake game where the object is to eat items to make your snake grow while avoiding your tail. This version has decent graphics, sounds and a variety of different enemies and levels for you to play.
Similar to AckAck (on page one of the Action section) but with a bit more polish. From the creators of the excellent Hexxagon game comes this one ... I don't like this game as much, it feels a bit like Missile Command but it's just not the same. The idea is that you control a cannon and have to shoot down the various paratroopers, bombs, etc. before they hit the ground. Nice presentation but not the greatest gameplay in my opinion.
This game is a PC version of the arcade classic game which is known in the arcade as "Pengo". In Pango the object is to kick around blocks (of ice in the arcade, here they just look like ... blocks ...) in order to defeat your enemies. There doesn't seem to be a time limit in this version, but even on "novice" difficulty the game is rather tough (for me at least). Bad CGA graphics and equally bad sounds but hey it's a classic! (Note: As usual, get DOSBOX or a slowdown program from the Essential Utilities page, otherwise this will probably run way too fast. Also, press 'P' at the menu for the controls, it doesn't use the arrow keys!)
If you've played Spitwad Willy, you've played Pea Shootin' Pete. While I'm not entirely sure about the history of this game, it seems as though after Raoul Said created Spitwad Willy, he either licensed it to Pack Media Company under a new name, or rebranded it when be became involved somehow with the company. Anyways, other than that, it's pretty much the same game, and as such still borrows heavily from Pang (aka Buster Bros). Still fun to play, though as mentioned if you've already played Spitwad Willy it becomes rather unnecessary.
Also known as Toppler, this Russian made game (with text in Russian, but its not really necessary to play the game) was apparently made, in part, as a social political commentary. Right, whatever, its still a fun game to play. The object is to hop across rapidly sinking and reappearing lilypads, collecting bonus tokens and eventually making it to the last golden coin (?) token, and moving on to the next level. Strangely entertaining! (Note: You will need a slowdown program from the Essential Utilities page, probably DOSBox or MoSlo, to run this on modern PCs.)
A "worm" style game similar to the QBasic classic "Nibbles". You play a worm who is in search of pizza. It plays much the same as other worm games, except for the fact that you aren't restricted to movement at 90 degree angles. It looks pretty good, and has some SB sounds and music. (Although the music that stops and goes during gameplay may get annoying ...)
The Queen of Hearts Maze Game could have been more accurately titled the Queen of Hearts Pacman Clone. This ASCII (text-mode) game presents a fairly basic Pacman inspired game replacing the ghosts with Mary Lynn Club, Diamond Jim, Sam Spade and Wild Card Hitchcock. Gameplay wise there's not much new here but it will likely be interesting to text-mode and/or Pacman fans. (Note: Will run too fast on any modern computer, use DOSBox or MoSlo to slow it down.)
Racer is a simple car racing game with randomly generated tracks. In practice the name is a bit misleading, because although you drive a car the object is to collect items for points and avoid crashing, not to "race" against anyone else. The game plays like an inverted "falling down the well" sort of game, and although the graphics scroll smoothly there isn't a lot of exciting stuff to be found here.
In Search of Dr Riptide is a fun adventure/shooting game in which you control a tiny underwater submarine, attached to which is an even tinier submarine! :) The object is to simply make it to the exit on each level while collecting powerup items and treasure, and avoiding the baddies that attack you under the sea. This game features some nice graphics and good sound effects; a well made and polished game. Unfortunately it seems a bit short but what's there is quite well done.
Despite its simple stick graphics, this game is actually quite enjoyable, as long as you don't take it too seriously. The game involves shooting robots while avoiding various other objects, like rolling logs and UFOs. The death scenes when your character dies are rather amusing ... it's just in fun of course, these are just stick characters. :)
Neat flying/driving/jumping/3D game. As you can tell, it's hard to describe. Basically it's a 3D 'racing' game, but you're not really racing, just trying to make it to the end of the course. It's a bit weird (and can be a bit annoying at times) but it's still neat. Nice VGA pre-fancy-3D-card graphics. The full version of this game has been released as freeware, so you get ALL the tracks! Cool!
