Abuse is a great side-scrolling action game that uses a unique system to control your character. You use the keyboard to move around and the mouse to aim your gun. It works pretty well and the game can be great fun to play, since it has nicely done graphics and sound effects, as well as many levels and powerups. ("Free Abuse" is a fan project to remake the original Abuse game using public domain material. In practical terms it should be the same as the original game.)
A somewhat annoying game where the object is to shoot down enemy paratroopers as they drop from planes. The graphics are only average, and the PC speaker sound effects are really annoying (they can be turned off), however, it still can be fun in short spurts.
Looking for a frantic action game that is all over in around 30 seconds? If so, this is your game. Aliens come onto the screen, and you blast them. Fun at first, but obviously there isn't much replay value. It does feature VGA graphics and SB sounds, although neither is very impressive.
Somewhat a clone of the classic 'Nibbles' game, in this one you are a snake who must gobble up fruit; each time you do, your snake gets longer. (Not meant in any obscene way.) Anyways, the VGA graphics aren't too bad, but since there's no variation in the levels, this game could get boring quickly.
An extremely old vollyball type game, where you control a big nosed guy and try to use your head to knock a vollyball over a net. Sounds weird? Yep. CGA graphics, and PC speaker sounds ... bleh! The computer opponent is tough, but it could be fun for brief peroids of time as a two player game.
Assault Trooper is an isometric action game where you are sent on various military missions, such as infiltrating the enemy's base. The game looks good (although the various characters/sprites are very small so they can be tough to see) and plays fairly well. The action can get rather frantic at times and the computer controlled AI enemies seem reasonably intelligent. (Apparently the full version of this game is now freeware.)
Banatron is a simple 2 or 3 player "snake" type game. (Also similar to "Nibbles"; you can get that game from QBasic.com in the "Action" category. QBasic itself is part of the "Old DOS" package from Microsoft.) Err, anyways, back to Banatron. It's not really anything special, pretty basic gameplay, but if you want a simple multiplayer snake game (multiple players on the same computer) it may be worth trying out.
If you've ever played Streets of Rage (in an arcade or for any of Sega's old home console systems) you'll know what to expect from Beats of Rage. This game aims to recreate the classic series. They have done a great job, and the game looks great. A lot of the graphics have been ripped directly from popular fighting games (not just the SoR series) and the game plays very well. There's also a Windows version available at the link below if the DOS version isn't working for you. (Note that the size of the .zip file for this game is 54megs!)
This action game involves flying a plane up the screen, shooting down other planes and bombing ground targets. While the graphics are not bad, overall the game is rather repetitive, and it's difficult to avoid the enemy's bullets since your plane is so large.
This is a Bomberman style game that, not too surprisingly, uses bombs and bugs! The game looks really good, and includes lots of SB sound effects. You can play with up to four players, and there are a couple different levels, each with unique graphics. The only problem is that many of the options are turned off in the unregistered version, and you have to wait a bit before starting the game. Still, it's fun to play, and definitely worth a try.
Played Bomberman? You probably have, and if so, you'll know what to expect from Boom Master. It's another very playable remake of Bomberman. It has quite good graphics and SB sound effects, although the shareware version is a bit limiting (you must register for all the levels and features).
Bouncing Babies is something of a classic PC game. Not necessarily because it's fun to play, more just because it's old. It play similarly to the Nintendo LCD Game'n'Watch series of handheld games that were popular about 20 years ago. The object is to catch (bounce) the babies falling out of the burning building to lead them to safety. It certainly will test your eye hand coordination but the extremely simple gameplay and very dated graphics will probably get old quickly. (Note: You will probably need to use DOSBox or MoSlo to get this game running at normal speeds! Get both from the Essential Utilities page.)
Captain Eric is a vaguely Gauntlet-like game that involves avoiding or shooting enemies ("aliens"), collecting powerups, and finding the exit through various mazes. One nice touch is that the mazes are partially randomly generated. That is, each progressive level has a basic design, but the particular layout of each level is different each time you play. Despite the random element, the bland EGA graphics and questionable controls dampen the fun a bit.
This demo version of the formerly popular car racing / gore game give you a taste of what the full game had to offer; and for many it will be enough! :) Unlike most racing games, this one actually rewards you for damaging the other cars (you get more money at the end of the race depending on how much damage you cause). You can also run over pedestrians. (No bonuses for that!) The games graphics were pretty good for their time, and the controls handle reasonably well. (NOTES: I was unable to get this game working in Windows XP! Also, this game is VIOLENT and INAPPROPRIATE for children so please get your parent's permission before downloading.)
The sequel to Cyberdogs (below), C-Dogs improves the original Cyberdogs gameplay formula. The game involves you taking your character on missions which usually involve shooting anything around using a variety of weapons that can be bought before missions. Many more options are available in this version, one of the most interesting being an editor that allows you to create your own C-Dogs campaigns. Note: I couldn't get any sound working on my computer but I've added this anyways because I assume that most people should get sound ... don't email me about this problem because I can't help! :)
A top view Gauntlet style shooter. It's simple, fast and a heck of a lot of fun, especially in two player mode. First, you use money to buy different weapons. Then you walk through different areas collecting items and killing guards. It's more fun than it sounds when I describe it, especially considering the small size of the zipfile. :)
This is a clone of the Tron light-cycle style game where the object is to make your opponent(s) crash into your tail as you move around the playing field. The best feature about this version is that it includes many options that you can set (including up to four players, any/all of which can be controlled by the computer), and you can save your options so you won't have to set them each time you play.
Top-down racing games are sort of a sub-genre of the larger racing genre, and Death Rally is a good example of how to do things right. Sort of like Super Sprint with more destruction. The graphics are great, as are the sounds, and the gameplay involves picking up or buying cool weapons to destroy the other cars in the races (hence the name). One of Apogee's later products, this game has all the markings of Apogee's other quality products.
