Actually, I really want to find this out too. I used Partition Magic, a Windows partitioning program and apparently Ubuntu doesn't like it.

All I know is that your suppose to do it off the Ubuntu CD

Speaking of partitions. Tell me. My friend bought a new puter. It had Vista. He removed it and put on winxp. Apparently, says he, when he installed windows, puter was partitioned into 3. Why would that happen?

Possibilities:
1 primairy for system, 2 and 3 for data?
1 primairy for system, 1 for data, 1 hidden one for recovery?

If it was partitioned under VISTA he find those partitions back when he installed XP. You need to delete those partitions, formatting will not remove those. On the other hand, having a -(smaller)- C: for system files and a -(large)- D: for data is the key to keep your system clean and fast.

And hyde: works with PartMag 8.05, but you must know what you do. If you're a beginner (we all been there) you really better use the install/partition prog that's on the CD.

As said already a post or two up, PM works, but I always run it from a bootCD, can make a difference maybe.
If you absolutely want to use PM is stead of the UBU program for partitioning, this is how it should look:


Keep in mind, a swapspace is allocated, but NOT formated !!!

Ubuntu should come with either QParted or GParted. Use that to format.

hehe to remove partitions under winXP, just run the disk management tool and right click on the other partitions and choose delete of course this does not let you adjust the windows partition because windows is in use -.- thus if you wish to extend your windows partition you will need some third party tool.

Yeah, but if you plan ahead, you can choose the right partitioning when you install XP. I for one never needed to modify a partition AFTER I installed XP!

dosraider: Thanks a lot for the help. I guess I'll stick with the Ubuntu partitioning program for now since I really don't know much about partitioning in the first place.

This is the way I used to do it:

1) Use Partition Magic to resize the size of your Windows Partition
2) Select Apply
3) Reboot your computer with the Live CD in it
4) Click Install
5) When they ask stuff about the partitioning, select the option which means that it uses the largest free part of you HD. It will now automatically make partitions for Ubuntu and you don't have to do anything

I'll just put this question to an end.

I have no idea why people are telling you to waste the time with Partition Magic. Ubuntu comes with either qparted or gparted. That program will do everything you need from a pretty gui.

Most brand-name computers come like this.

1. Windows
2. Data
3. Recovery partition

I'd just tell them to format it all, download XP, set the primary partition to like 20-40 gigs and then set the other partition to the rest of the drive, and use it for data.

All those people telling him the same: use the partition prog that is shipped with Ubu, let that one do the job.

I didn't say anything about needing to fix it. It's all smooth now. I was just wondering why it does that. Dosraider answered me fine in the first half of his post a billion posts ago.

Thanks for the advice on partitioning my disk with the software that comes with Ubuntu. Worked well, however the operating system itself wasn't really what I was looking for right now. Oh well, I'll probably go back to using it again sometime, but for now I'll stick with Windows, I guess.

I like Linux,its very stable.For *CLEAR THROAT* many...many...reasons.

If you didn't touch the CLI, then you don't know what you're missing. If you did, then what was it lacking?
