I downloaded Commander Keen 4 from the dosgames site. It contains these three files: Ck4sw14.shr - File_id.diz and Install.exe
When I click on the Install.exe file, a DOS screen apears with:
Error: could not find C:\WINDOWS\etc.\INSTALL.EXE file ??? |

Hey, I'm trying to play this game on a Win 98SE. Do I still need dosbox to play the game? I thought that it would work on a Win98 PC.
I just installed this game on a Win XP PC without dosbox and that works fine |

Depending of your hardware most Dosgames can run in XP, but it's highly advisable to run them through dosbox. Dosgames uses something called DMA, DMA and NT ones aren't friends. (Yes, XP is a NT one).
More: XP has only mediocre SB emulation, Dosbox emulates a SB (almost) perfectly.
Most dosgames won't be able to use an USB mouse or joystick directly in XP.
Dosbox takes care of that kind of restrictions.
For W98: you can run most dosgames safely directly in W98 by editing the memory params in the shortcut if needed (If there isn't one create one). W98 had a good Dosbase. Some Dosgames that can't run in W98( there are some ...) can run in dosbox, by restarting the PC in dosmode, or by using a dosboot floppy.
Problematic can be the soundcard, if that one isn't doscompatible you'll need dosbox to get sound. Depends of your hardware ......
And again: installing games in C:\windows isn't very smart. Even in W98. |

Well I just clicked on the install file and that screen appeared himself. I didn't choose a location yet.
But I'm going to try it on dos box. Thanks for your help |
