I used to have this game ages ago, but I'd lost the disks. Recently I got a new copy, but it won't let me install.
I click the install button from the autorun screen, but then nothing happens. I look in taskbar and I need ntvdm taking up 99% of the cpu, but there's no error message.
I know this box can handle the game, it has before in the past. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. |

I'm running on xp, and was lucky enough to grab an actual disk off a bargain big. :p
And I know of the patches, but doesnt the game have to be installed first in order to implement them? I cant even get to the setup screen. |

Don't use the autorun, launch setup manually from the CD itself, and try to set the installer in W98 comp.
If that still doesn't work:
Install it on a W98 PC and copy the files to your XP PC.
That or in VPC-W98. |

FWIW, you reminded me of this great old game, so I decided to install it on my new computer, a wXP.
Just clicked on the setup executable from the cd-rom navigation and did a complete install. Then, when launching the game, I went under properties for the launcher for "terran.exe" (the executable), set it to "windows 98/me compatability mode", and launched. Ran perfectly. No patches installed as of yet.
If you try this and you're having problems, it's because you've got a damaged copy. Ask for a refund.
Edit:
In anticipation of your next question - the XP patch Firaxis lists is good, but it seems to fail to detect if you have a 64 bit processor (I do), so it might cause the game to crash after you install it. (It did for me) It's really easy to fix, though, just open Alpha Centauri.ini and set the "ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm" variable equal to 1. You'll still get an error message when you boot up, but you'll be able to continue playing. |
