Before I get into the description, I checked over the long list that is being currently compiled at http://gaming.trekcore.com/alpha_list.html, and none of the games I clicked on were what I was looking for. So here it is; hopefully someone out there can help me remember and point me in the right direction.

The game I'm looking for was a tactical simulation between federation ships, klingon ships, and possibly other races (not sure about the third, but I specifically remember federation and klingon). The game took place on a static screen with a thin border around it, it was very basic EGA graphics and the ships were very small on the screen and only one color (each ship was a different color, but no sprites were used, simple colored pixels only). The game could be set up for single player vs. AI, multiplayer, or multiplayer vs. AI. There may have even been an option for teams. So all the action took place on the static screen, but at any time a player could key in to issue orders. This took the player to a seperate screen, where they could divert power to shields, engines, phasers, damage control, etc. Phasers would have to "charge", so the more power you diverted to the phasers and the longer you waited the more damage you'd do. However, distance diminished the power of phasers. Each ship had torpedoes but had different characteristics. The federation torpedoes often missed at long distances, while the klingon always hit but for less damage.

Two other things about the game that I remember is that whenever a sound was played (firing a torpedo or phasers), the game would pause until the sound was done playing. The other thing I remember is that as you played, the game would speed up (literally).

Turbotrek had rang a bell, but I downloaded it and it is NOT the game I am thinking of. My memory wants me to believe the title of the game doesn't given credence to it being a star trek clone, but I'm just not sure. Anyone out there remember this game?

No it wasn't Vtrek. The main screen, where the ships are displayed, is entirely black except for the ships and the border (if my memory serves me accurately). Thanks for trying though.

There may have been borg and romulans in the game, but you couldn't play as them. I might also be way off on this particular part of what I remember about it.

Wait a sec ....
Rereading your posts....
You're looking for a Star Trek clone, but you aren't sure it's even a Star Trek clone afterall.
In fact it could be any 4X space exploration game.
Or any homemade/fanmade space game.
Hmmmm.

You'll find some@ http://www.mobygames.com/game-group/4x-games

And even if HotU is a bit slow to use as search engine' it's still a huge database:
http://www.the-underdogs.info/genre.php?name=Strategy&subgen=4X%20in%20space
http://www.the-underdogs.info/genre.php?name=Simulation&subgen=Space%20sim

And then I even won't mention the thousands that are on smaller fansites, shareware-freeware games, whatever .....

Good hunting.

It's not a 4x game, as there is no exploration or exploitation. It is only a tactical combat simulator. But I'll definitely check the links.

I found the game! It's called Intra-Galactic Battles, and it's all the fun I remembered. There are 4 races to choose from, with built in scenarios and the opportunity to make custom scenarios. The game has some flaws, albeit, but loads of tactical depth. If anyone is interested, here is the link:
