Don't be too sure XP will work on it.
On my son's newer ACER dual core you need to PATCH XPsp2 to even install it.
No XP drivers for the new soundchip, forgot what it's named, but you need again to do strange things to get it working in XP, and even then several games simply freeze when sound is used.
Same for the onboard vidchip (laptop :/). Problems in XP, runs flawless in Vista.

New hardware ya know, new I/O ports and such, no XP drivers for them.
Next problem: Vista is native fully dual core compatible, XP runs slower on it then Vista .... and so on.

Again: Vista is not directly to blame here, more the hardware manufacturers and the lack of XP compatible driver development.

not sure how old the one I have ordered is, but it will have XP SP2 on it, but if it doesn't work they will contact me and state that I need to have Vista (which they will charge the same price) only problem though is I won't be able to open the Documents on the Desktop PC cause I'm running Office 2003.

Not 'so' new laptop then, older model.

FYI:
Office 2003 works in Vista, that is if you have the official one and can update it.
Some have a kind of a problem with the older outlook, depends more how the network is set up. But outlook works, only asks everytime for the network password.
If they deliver the laptop with office for Vista (2007), it is able to import the 2003 documents. Think about it, many companies still have XP and Vista mixed up in their offices.
I never had problems to open-edit from 2003->2007 or from 2007->2003.

And if your office is not legal simply go on OpenOffice2. That's freeware.
That's what I use on my home compy. And it can work with the MS Office files.
It even can make *.PDF files.

I don't like it at all! I even tried downgrading my vista laptop but alas it wasn't compatible with XP....so I had to go back to Vista.

Why wasn't it compatible with XP?

You need all the drivers for it to be compatible with XP

Some of the newer chipsets need specific drivers, you need to download them to be able to install XP.
Mainly -but not only- SATA stuff.
And not to mention the new audio onboard chips, damn can't remember the name right now, they don't work very good with XP.

To conclude: new 'up to date' hardware: Vista.
And it's faster on dual cores anyway, useless to buy a dual core to run XP.

Evolution it's called.
And if you don't like the Vista look, it still has the win classic desktop.
All the useless eye candy and bloathware is killed in 2 minutes work.
Good riddens anyway.

Oh yeah, Vista SP1 is out. (Not for all languages).
I wonder what they gonna screw up this time. LOLZ.

Of course you always can buy a Mac. Suspicious

Vista has caused huge problems at Uni. We have been working on speech recognition software. Vista + this s/w = HUGE disaster.
It has been such a mess the course team have had to re-write assignments for vista users because the s/w won't work properly.

The Uni claims they tested the s/w and it worked fine last year. I dunno how much to believe. But I have heard as various updates were released for Vista it messed up things it didn't previously effect (e.g. COD4)

Most problems are PISBKAC ones, people expect Vista to behave as Xp, but it ain't XP. Vista is finally protecting itself, much more then XP.

For those who don't know:
PISBKAC = Probem Is Situated Between Keyboard And Chair.

If he installs Ubuntu with the only purpose to emulate windows to run his progs ....LOLZ... better simply install XP instead.

(Not that I don't like Ubuntu.)
