Years ago I had Commander Keen on an old 3.1 computer. Now my wife wants me to set it up on my windows XP (Home Version).
My question is 1. Will it work on Win XP?
2. If so what would be the best joystick to buy?
Thank You |

1. You can play commander keen using Dosbox (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net) and yes depending on the version of the game (1 - 3 should work fine without trouble, 4 - 7 will work but the sound most likely wont), it will work fine in XP otherwise.
2. I doubt any joysticks of that era will work on a modern computer as they require serial ports. Unless you can emulate a Serial port through USB.
If you have more questions please ask

Your joystick will work in most games when played through dosbox.

A bit more explaination:
Most (probably even all) joysticks that work good in Win will work fine in dosgames through dosbox.
USB joysticks also.
What dosbox can't do is improve the joystick response, when they were crappy in plain dos with certain games they will have a crappy respond in dosbox with that specific game.
As for C Keen, I personally never used a joystick, keyboard was much better and accurate. Only reason I can see to use a joystick would be on a laptop.
Damn I hate laptop key layouts for gaming.
Worthless.
"starting problems" .......... ...... I may be old but the apparatus still works fine, snotjong. |

Wait, are we still talking about the smiley scootmobiles?
I put a disclaimer (about how it was based on the smiley and the way it animates) here but it looked like yet another bad joke. Nvm. |

Oh yeah. If you ask me (you didn't) joysticks aren't a that great of way of control for platformers.
~insert arguments~ |

Now, it's probably me, but the only games I use a joystick with are flight sims.
All platformers, FPS, whatever are keyboard + mouse only.
That's on an usual keyboard, I always screw things up when I'm on my son's laptop. Can't get used to the laptop's weird keys layout and 'small' design. |
