It's not that we can't block their IP address it's just that they have so many it would be an uphill battle on a slippery slope.

One thing I never figure out is why spam on different forums have different style. The main spam on this forum is the long advertisement with nonsense links. One another place seen before it's vulgar words & porn. Then some place is numberous repeated alphabets or words. Then there was one forum that allowed guest posting but had no spam. Then again there were hardly much posting in that forum too. This lead me to think maybe certain kind of spammers like to visit certain forums. Then again, there is no evidence to indicate spamming behaviour unless one conducts a survey like "Why do you like to spam". Of course no one would ever do that as it is not a wise idea. Wink

Actually, our most frequent type of spam is the smiley only posts. Those usually only occur in the guest accessable forums, but are extremely prevelant. (And very annoying) We have a good share of porno posts too, but those usually get deleted before most members can see them.

I can understand spamming because it can make you money (ads), and spamming because you're mad/you're trying to be funny. But I've never understood the one smiley/one character spam posts. Why would anyone want to do that?

Ah, I remember those "one simley post" some time back like the one A Frikkin Cuccoan or something else. During that time, I didn't post much but I still read posts. Wink Yeah, if they intended to spam, they should have more simlies. I don't understand it either but my guess is maybe it's a lazy spammer Tbbbbbth! (someone who wants to spam but is too lazy to type or click). Nowadays the prevalent spam seemed to have taken a different direction. Maybe there is a trend. Sarcastic

I liken it to the Space Madness Ren & Stimpy episode ... the "shiny, candy-like button" ... people see the little emoticon faces in the quick reply box and can't help pressing them Tbbbbbth!

I was talking to a friend of mine who has been a webmaster for quite awhile now and he told me that the boards he's an admin at suffered from pretty much the same problems when they had guest posting enabled. Unfortunately it seems the only way around it is to turn guest posting off, there don't seem to be any phpBB hacks that can solve the problem.
